In college athletics, the hierarchy of sports goes:
Football
Men's Basketball
Baseball

At LSU, the view is:
Football
Baseball
Men's Basketball

In the grand picture, given the current state of LSU Athletics, do you think the dominance of the Baseball program outweights, or at least makes up for what the Men's Basketball program lacks?

Things to consider are money generated, media exposure, etc...

What got me thinking about this was a Christmas Day discussion about the Directors Cup rankings and schools who seem to always compete in all the major sports.
It's not much of a surprise that Stanford has won 14 in a row and they have the largest athletic endowment of any school in the nation...

There are probably just as many schools that rank basketball ahead of football in order of importance.

Yes. Footbal & Baseball have to pay for the inept basketball program currently in place at LSU.

There's really no point to be made. It's just a question open for debate.

The Director's Cup ranks the most overall athletically dominant schools in the nation. LSU tends to rank between 10-15 annually (which is obviously impressive).

A better question might have been, do you think it would effect LSU's ranking in such a poll if our successes Basketball and Baseball were switched? Do you think we would be viewed as a more athletically dominant university?

More like:

Men's Basketball
Hockey/Lacrosse/Soccer/Volleyball/Baseball/Gymnastics/Track/etc

There is no real third sport in college athletics as a whole.

I'd say basketball is more important in fans eyes at more schools than you could imagine. Duke and UNC for example. Even at LSU baseball is more important to a lot of fans. There are many people that follow baseball only.

LSU could make it to the final four every year and it would still be third on most peoples list.

In the grand picture

I'd say any opinion based on a mere 12 months of historical perspective shouldn't be called a "grand picture." The relatively recent (last 20 years) success of LSU's now grand baseball program does not displace the historical significance of a program that produced Pete Maravich, Bob Petit, and Shaquille O'Neal, among others. To put it in perspective, if you asked every single person in America to name one LSU basketball player and one LSU baseball player, what do you think the results would be?

Our basketball program will be filling the arena again soon. When it does, no one will ever say that it once had to take a back seat to the baseball program.

While I don't know the numbers, I would bet basketball brings in much more money (factor of 10 maybe?) than baseball. This is due to TV and conference revenue sharing.

I'd be willing to bet that most people in USA couldn't name one of any.

thats great. most schools lose money in their athletic departments. we make money in 2 sports and a couple years ago, made money in the "big 3" sports. horrible point

How many people from the USA will remember him for playing at LSU? They will remember him for his time with the Lakers and Kobe.
