8 point I killed yesterday in Big Cane on the St. landry/Avoyelles parish border. I was walking back to the 4 wheeler when I heard deer crashing and chasing in the palmettos. This deer came running by down the ditch bank at 15 yards. I was some how able to get a shot off and luckily hit it through both lungs. It weighed 220 pounds.

Crap. All this chasing going on, and I'm in the office posting with dog killers.

man i was shooting a .270 and pretty much shot from the hip. Dont even know why I attempted the shot, guess it was just reflex. Still cant believe I even hit it b/c i was not really aiming just pointing and it happened to catch both lungs. He made it 50 yards.

I know the feeling. Horrible shot choice but in the moment that doesnt cross your mind. I'd have done the same and so would all the people that will come around and tell you how bad of a hunter you are

Yeah don't feel bad. The last one I shot up the arse. Was walking away from me into the woods and at that range I forgot my rifle would shoot a bit low. Dead is dead though don't matter how it got there. Surprisingly I didn't bust the gut

yes. anything over 2.5 is generally over 200 lbs. Most 3.5-5.5 year old deer will weigh 215-260.

Any soybean fields in the area? That is some massive body weight.

Our club is a 2100 acre block of woods surrounded by beans, milo, and rice all summer then winter wheat in the winter. Not much management on the place if the deer has a fork it is legal but we have lots of big deer just real hard to see them when the entire woods are 8 foot palmettos and we are limited on the trees we can cut.

Sounds like you are better off walking upon one with a shotgun in hand.

best thing to do when you hear them chasing out there is to get down and walk to the closest opening where you here them chasing. They wont hear you over all the noise they are making in the palmettos. It sounds like cars passing through the woods when they are chasing.

Some of the swamps I hunt are like that with the palmettos. I had a deer walk up about 10 feet from me last year on a dog hunt. I heard it coming for about 10 minutes but could never see it. It popped out from behind a palmetto within pissing distance.

Too bad it was a 50lb spike, or I would've knifed it to death.

Yeah, caught two of ours after the hunt and brought them back to the boat. Also caught a neighbors and put him in a pen for them to pick up.
