Moving out of state - Mail forwarding question

I am moving from TX to CA soon and I want to forward any old mail that I receive here in TX to my new address in CA.

The problem is I don't have a permanent address in CA yet. I will be staying for 30 days in a temporary housing provided by my new employer until I find my own apartment/house.

I can open a P.O box in CA online on the USPS website, but I they will not assign a P.O box number until I go there in person and show my ID.

So anybody got an tips for me on how to go about this?

Forward to a relative, have them forward to you.
Do this until you have an address.

you could always do a forwarding address to your temporary place, then to your new place. It isn't that hard. You could also do a hold for 30 days, but that is a few bills you won't get.

I was just in a similar situation, and I forwarded my mail to my temporary digs, and then to my new digs once I moved there.

good luck with the move.

i'm pretty sure it only takes a few days for the forward to start, so use your temp address until you get a permanent one?

When I moved from MA to CA, I opened a PO Box at the UPS Store. I had papers notarized and faxed a copy of that along with copies of my ID to the UPS Store and they opened a box for me so I could forward my mail.

May be something to try.

Can you not get your mail held for a period of time by the postal service (like if you were giong out of town for two weeks and didn't have anyoen to bring your mail in for you)?

I would request all mail be held for say 10 days, starting the day before you leave. As soon as you get to Cali, get your PO Box # and file the forwarding order. That should be in place by the time the temporary hold expires and they should forward your mail.
