Simply a fantastic movie. It's makred by some truly brilliant performances, and while Bale is rightfully getting the bulk of the praise, it's really the women who have stuck with me. Amy Adams isn't the inspiration for Mickey, she is the actual agent of change. And Melissa Leo just owns this movie as Alice, the domineering, incompetent, yet still loving mom/manager. The boxing scenes are almost irrelevent, really, but some in the theatre actually stood up and cheered at a knockout.
It's a tight family drama, and just an amazingly compelling film, far better than a sports movie should be. It may be the best movie I've seen this year.

I've heard a lot of good things about this movie, including the filming of the fight scenes which is suppose to make it more realistic.

Amy Adams just does it for me.

I went to see it last night. It's definitely in my Top 5 of 2010. However, I have yet to see True Grit, Black Swan, or The King's Speech.

I'm not a fan of the title. Obviously they didn't spend too much time thinking of ideas.

Saw it today, great movie. Bale is just damn good.

Saw this last night. Bale was amazing. When they showed the real Dickie at the end I just said "wow" at how perfectly Bale portrayed him.

I'm really looking forward to this one. Melissa Leo is teriffic in everything she does. She killed it in Frozen River.
And it seems Wahlberg, Bale and Adams are at the top of their game.

Black Swan was pretty fricking good, imo.

I've seen Black Swan and it's also very good but for different reasons. This was such an actor's movie, marked by truly great performances. I will single out Melissa Leo for her performance even over Bale.
I was simply blown away. And Amy Adams is really hot. Some of her scenes she's obviously wearing no makeup and she's still beautiful. And her showdown with Bale is stunning.

Wasn't bad. Thought it was a little self-indulgent, over-acted and didn't like the ending. The scene with Kunis and Portman was well worth it though

Agree - saw this movie yesterday and it greatly exceeded my expectations for it. As you said, the focus wasn't even really on Whalburg/Ward - it was on the people in his life who shaped what he eventually became (a champion).
Great film. I really enjoyed it.
And yes - Amy Adams is damn hot in this one...

What a great film! The performances, the story and the boxing. I thought it was all great. Best movie of 2010. The chain smoking, boozing, big haired, disgusting sisters had me cracking up too.

Right down to the way he talks... it was exact.
The only thing that pissed me off was that they only used about 10 seconds of Warriors Code by Dropkick Murphys (during one of the scenes where Micky is walking out to the ring). That song was written about Micky Ward... it could have at least got some play during the credits or something.

my only complaint with this movie is that they did not show any of his fights with arturo gatti.
other than this is movie was great. bale played an awesome crack addict. alice and her daughters were hilarious and amy adams role was very underrated.

Saw this on Saturday. Thought it was pretty awesome.
Actually, that was my main gripe with the movie. I thought the fight scenes were fairly unrealistic. But I liked how they filmed them though (to look like HBO fights from 15-20 years ago).
Big time. I was glad they put that little clip at the end. You knew the whole movie that Bale had given a solid performance, but it wasn't until the end that you knew JUST how good he nailed Ecklund. That was pretty incredible.
And I also agree with Baloo that the mom nailed her role. I'm not a huge Marky Mark fan, and there were certain times during the movie when I felt like I was watching him instead of Micky Ward, but all in all the gf and I both really liked this movie.
