Anybody have any details or ever been? Is there any way I can get back there without a go-devil? TIA.

I hunted there while I was in Law School. I don't think there's any way you can get in and out the primary part of the refuge (the open area) safely, without a Go-Devil or some equivalent. Sometimes, its rough even with a Go-Devil.
For example, on one hunt, we went in with no problem. Hunted the entire day. During that time the tide was apparantly falling out. When we went to leave, I looked down at the water, and I'd say there was only about 3 inches of water covering the slop. We only had about 300 yards from where we were hunting to get back to the channel. It took us about 3 hours to cover that distance, with a Go-Devil. We were moving about 1-4 feet per try, before the motor would bog down in the mud.
I don't think there is anyway you could hunt there with a regular outboard and feel safe about you're chances of getting out.

Thanks. We were thinking about running back the canal and tying up and paddling in a pirgue but I'm not sure if that's even a possibility. We're also in school so we're looking to find some birds on public land.

We hunt there now. We use kayaks to get down the old cypress logging channels. There is no way you can get back there with a regular outboard.

Is there anywhere I can dock or tie up my boat and drop the pirogue in the water?

We used to motor down Galva canal, tie off and paddle canoes on the prarie. That used to be the only method allowed to access this place. So, yes, you can definitely do it that way.

Are you killing any birds? I hunted there and across the pass at Jones Island I believe many years ago. We killed birds first few years then they just dried up. I haven't been there in fifteen years at least.

We hunted there in the mid 70's till the mid 80's and I can't tell you how many greenheads we killed. Then one year they were just gone. we hunted the burn for the next couple of years and had good days and bad. We ended up using a small wide flat bottom skiff with a 15hp motro kicked up to run shallow water. It beat the heck out of a Go Devil. I made 1 hunt last year with my neighbor and couldn't believe the rosoe growing back there. We use to stop on the side of the road and cut it to brush the boat. I guess the stuff took root. We hunted one day before Christmas and a blue norther came in. We watched the water turn to ice. We helped 4 guys in pirogues get out, they couldn't fight the wind and break the ice at the same time. We tried talking 2 other guys into coming out with us but the ducks were flying and they wanted to get their limits. Sad to say they didn't make it. They were found the next morning hugging a cypress stump.
