I watched that play a few times and noticed he jumped the short route pretty early. I'm not a football coach so I'd like to hear some opinions on what most of you think about that play. Did he gamble (as he's been known to do) and jump the short route too early, therefore leaving K. Hatcher out to dry, or did he play it correctly and it was all on K. Hatcher and his bad angle? It looked like that K. Hatcher got over there as fast as he could, but I could be wrong.

It was a zone coverage. PP7 had short, Shep was dropping back to take intermediate and Hatcher was suppose to have deep. He took a HORRIBLE angle on that play.

Even if he did jump too soon Hatcher had a perfect opportunity to hit the WR for a minimal game but whiffed.

PP had the short coverage and Hatcher the safety had the deep coverage. On both TDs Hatcher for some reason tried to knock the player down rather than tackle the player.

Patrick Peterson is the most overrated player I've ever seen at LSU. He is very good, but he was billed as teh best in the nation. He simply did not make enough big plays as a defensive player to warrant such credit. He didn't do anything in our biggest games against the best opponents.

It was on both of them. PP should have took that Hamilton since he was the outside receiver, but Hatcher should have shown up after he got 15-20 yards.

PP after the game said "I should have challenged him but I dropped back instead"

He admitted his mistake fwiw.

False. It wasn't a zone man coverage. It was a depth coverage.

that play was peterson's fault. I love the guys that come on here and say oh we were in a zone read ot Tampa 2 blah blah blah like they know what the hell they're talking about. He was matched up with that receiver and left him to cut off another route he thought Mallett was throwing. it was his fault hands down. No way the safety has time to get over there on that play. It's complete lunacy to even say otherwise. People on here will blast you for saying anything negative about peterson but he has not lived up to the hype. the long returns he had against arkansas were blocked very well with huge holes and in the end he let the f*ckin kicker tackle him twice. people need to take off the purple and gold blinders. we've had some pretty good players in the secondary that are playing nfl ball right now that i would say have played just as good if not better than PP7.

Not when the high safety is lined up just a few steps from the numbers, which is where Hatcher was on that play.

You say that one pass was Peterson's fault, I disagree, but in any case, how many other pass attempts did the first round NFL draft pick Ryan Mallet even throw to PP7's man?

I'll admit that Bama went after Peterson, but Julio Jones is no chump. Most other teams didn't attempt to throw by Peterson. It's hard to get interceptions when only 1 or 2 passes a game are thrown in your direction.

I tend to agree w/ you, but I just wasn't sure. When he sticks on a man, he's about as good as we've ever had, but most of his screw ups are when he guesses and tries to leave his man/zone to go get a pick six and gets burned. Part of the reason IMO is b/c he is so talented he gets bored and wants to make a play.

How can YOU say this as fact? Peterson said he should have pushed him off the line. That doesn't mean that was his man. As soon as the ball was snapped Peterson played shallow coverage, Shep ran back and took the intermediate route away and Hatcher was late getting over there. None of them were playing a man. Hatcher could have actually made the tackle if he didn't take the worst angle I've ever seen.

this is the reason for the new NFL fines and missed tackles in all of football. players want to hit now, not tackle. its dangerous for both players, Off & Def. i saw one game early this season, can't remember which game, the defensive player that made the hit, hyperextended his back. DO IT RIGHT, DUMBASSES!!

This loss to me is on Chavis. And I like the man and the Coach he called a bad game it happens. On the pass right before the half. Why are we not rushing 3 and having everyone else playing 2o yards off the ball. The safeties were 10 yards back and we rushed 5.

The whole team needed to challenge Arkansas more.

After watching the replay myself and reading this thread I felt it was a great throw as the anouncers said "thru a very small window". Hatcher just missed the tackle. The second long TD just before the half I thought PP should have taken a more aggressive angle to cut off the reciever's cut out to the outside. We also should have been in a prevent defense last play before half 80 yds away, so I blame that one on the coaches.

PP has been playing out of scheme for a few weeks now trying to make big plays. It cost us on that one.
