Shooting a deer in the neck

Where do you aim when doing this? Just below the head? Middle?
I've always shot them in the heart/lungs but I know a lotta people shoot does in the neck.

I have tracked more than a few deer where the expert marksman shoots em in the neck.
Maybe in the marsh, but other than that punch their lungs out, and pick em up 50 yards off.

I dont care for the neck shot, but I'd say its best to aim at the base of the neck.

If you hit the spine they fall in their tracks. The problem is there is no good landmark on the body to identify the 3inch wide spine in a 13 inch wide neck. If you want the same effect aim high over the shoulder but you will damage some of the backstrap.
For maximum meat retention and short tracking shot them in the head but you better be damn sure you can hit that small bobbing target. A shot to the nose or mouth will likely kill the deer but not in time for you to find it.

I neck shoot and have either missed completely or they dropped Immedietly. The only time i have ever shot a deer in the shoulder or farther back must have been because of wind or something, i dont know.

I've always shot the heart and picked the deer up 30-40 yards from where it stood. Last year aimed for the head, hit it where the jaw connects to the skull, perfect shot, was awesome, deer just fell over right there.

You've never shot a deer big enough to mount ? Most places like for you to bring the capes in, and I don't want a hole in the cape...

I lost all interest of shooting deer behind the shoulder. I only take neck shots now. Adds a little more skill to it.

I usually shoot deer in the shoulder. If I'm not worried about missing I would probably shoot them in the neck, but if I wasn't worried about missing I wouldn't be pulling the trigger. Exceptions are made of course.
When I was younger and hunted every day I shot a few in the head on a bet. They drop. If you feel that you have to shoot it in the neck, the best place is at the base of the neck, IMHO. Or you could just shoot the damn thing high in the shoulder and do the same thing.
ETA: I have shot a couple in the liver and had them pile up like a sack of potatoes.

Just shoot the heart. If you hit the chest area, you shouldn't have to track it far (massive blood loss).

Hunting scrapes in a thicket I've had to do this b/c it was the only shot I was gonna get. Pick a hole and when the rack goes thru squeeze the trigger. Not the best case scenario but at the time it was my only option. Pipeline, powerline, open woods, food plot I would take the behind the shoulder shot.

Up to 50-100 yards - neck shot. Two advantages: 1. They go down. Usually a spine shot - instantly paralyzed. A little forward, and you blow out the windpipe and great vessels. Either way, they're going down. Great for evening hunts, when you don't want to blood trail after dark. 2. You don't beat up any significant meat. You do need to be a good, experienced shooter, with a zeroed in gun. If you don't feel comfotable with the shot, then chest right behind the front leg is safest, but I have seen many deer run 100 or more yards when hit, and there may not always be much of a blood trail.

In all these scenarios, there are better shots. The only time this is a good shot to take is when you have no other shot. Period. The neck is never a smart shot when there is the opportunity to shoot the animal in the vitals.

I've killed a lot of them neck shot. I've missed ONE. Got him later and you could tell by the burn across his neck.
Hit it, it's death. Hit Heart Lung it's also death and a lot more room for 'less than excellence' in shooting. Especially with the right high velocity, rapid deceleration round.
