The jersey is passed from Senior to Senior based on who has shown character and perserverance through adversity.
Murphy has lost his parents and has been unfortunately injured much of his time at LSU. He could have easily given up on football and moved on with his life, but he stuck around, worked hard, and continued to help the LSU team knowing he probably would not be a starter/major contributer to the team.
Find me one person who deserves it more.

Of course Murphy deserves to keep it if he comes back.
The #18 jersey is to go to a proven leader of the team, a person that has had to overcome huge obstacles to get to where they are.
You can argue that Murphy maybe hasn't produced like others on the team, but you cannot argue that he is not a proven leader (often working on the side with the younger players) and that he has had amazingly difficult obstacles to overcome.

It was to prove a point. I never truly hope anyone loses family members, but if the douche poster would be in Murphy's shoes, do you think he would be making those stupid comments?
