How far does the sound of a gunshot typically travel?

I assumed it was 1/4 to 1/2 mile. But this occured well over a mile from my house as the crow flies. I was outside and it was clearly heard.

quote:

Two men were shot and wounded, one critically, Friday night on North 47th Street, a Baton Rouge Police Department spokeswoman said in a release Saturday.

Officers arrived at 1091 N. 47th St. about 10:40 p.m. to find the two victims wounded by gunfire and lying on the side of the road, Capt. Joan Cage said in the release.

One man was wounded several times in his chest and was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Cage said.

The second victim was shot in the lower half of his body, sustaining minor injuries, Cage said.

Police do not have any information on the shooter or shooters or a possible motive.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Homicide Division at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.

Completely dependent on the environment it is fired in.

I understand it has to do with the type of gun, wind direction, and physical objects in the path but say you're shooting a 9mm in a Kansas field. Can you hear it 3 miles away?

I was at a friends house near Acadian and Government about 2 years ago and heard 3 very audible "pops". About 5 minutes later one of the targets ran around the corner screaming "they shooting over there!!". Needless to say we went inside, locked the door and armed ourselves. The next day I saw something in the paper about it and it was over a 1/4 mile from where we were for sure.

I hear rifle shots while hunting from way further than that.

Humidity of the air... Day or night... etc. There is no one correct answer.

Exactly. I actually researched this a few years ago after hearing an exchange in Gardere from my house in Highland Creek. I distinctly heard 3 pops and 1 boom. I joked that a thug shot a pistol at someone and the dude blew his arse away with a shotgun, which is exactly what was in the news the next day. This happened about a mile away and the cold clear night makes this easily within range. So, 3 miles is plausible considering the weather. Plus I put a CSB in there for good measure.

Depends.

More than likely the answer is yes.

Humidity, wind, and terrain would be huge factors in the way sound travels.
