Why didn't Bama try an Onside Kick down 24-21 w ~3:25 to go?

Not sure why they kicked away? Even if they failed at an onside kick and LSU got a long FG, Bama would still have been within one score of winning. Possession trumps field position when trailing late in a game. As it turns out, they only had 3 plays and ~ 23 seconds to work with in order to tie or win at the end. Thanks, Lil Nicky!

He probably had faith in his defense. And he was almost correct. It took a great play by JL to ice the game.

Nick is a legit coach.

Are you serious?

3:25 and 2 timeouts with a good run defense.

I would assume it was due to the fact that they only needed a field goal to tie.

They had 2 timeouts left, and I suppose they felt they could hold us to 3 and out.

Kick it deep, hold us to 3 and out, use your timeouts, and end up with great field position for the win or the tie. If Jarret Lee doesn't complete the 3rd and 14, they have just under 2 minutes to drive and score points.

They made the right call IMO.

They had 2 timeouts left at the time

If they don't recover, LSU just needs 10-15 yards to give Jasper a chance to make it a 2-score game. In which case Bama would likely have less than 3 minutes to drive the length of the football field (70-80 yards) for a touchdown.

After kicking, if you force a 3&out, Bama would likely have less than 3 minutes to drive 30-40 yards for a FG.

It was the right decision

It was the right call. It's all about field position. If he didn't have timeouts he would of gone for the onside kick. If Bama gets a 3 and out against LSU after the kickoff Bama would get it around their own 35. If Bama onside kicks it and doesn't get it LSU would pin them inside the 20.

In your scenario LSU would have gotten a first down and ran the clock down to around 20 seconds before they kick the field goal.

They looked a the charts and didn't see LSu completing a 40 yards 3rd down pass.

How did Dscworcek get down so fast for the hit?

Kicking away was the right call. They actually got an extra timeout with the injury. They had us almost stopped. They just couldn't finish. They are a good team. Not a great one. Saban is a great coach when he has great talent. Compare their team to us in 2004. A few pieces to the puzzle missing makes it hard for Nicky to do what he wants and his conservative nature hurts him.

simple. stop lsu, use your timeouts and get the ball back with over 2 minutes left. all you need is a FG to send game into OT. if you lose the onside kick, game over. it was the right decision; it just didn't work.

They didn't have time to practice the onside this week. They used the extras time to put in an Auburn gameplan thinking there was NO way they would needed special teams.

That's because we converted on 3rd down. If that did not happen, they would have about 2 minutes to drive for a FG.

They have a good defense and our offense ain't exactly a first down machine. Best bet there is to kick away, and force a punt. LSU offense usually gets super conservative at times like those. In fact, I think the ballsiest thing coach miles did Saturday was to attempt a passing play and 3rd down there. ( ballsy for miles of course).

With 3 minutes left in the game, Danielson said if LSU didn't get a first down, they would lose the game. Translation: Bama would not end up with a game-tying FG but would score a game winning TD if they got the ball back with any time left. I don't doubt the truth of what he said; if we don't pick up that first down, we lose the game. And Saban clearly thought he'd get the ball back with time to cross the goal line.

because Nicky knew that the Tiger offense would have very conservative calls to try and run out some clock

BAMA has a good run def

LSU has an avg at best offense.

He had 2 TOs to stop the clock (TO aren't as important on offense bc of the clock stoppage on 1st downs)

All he needed was a FG to tie.

In fact, I would believe that most would say it would have been a poor decisison to onside kick.
