I'll resize the wallpaper later for different screen sizes. If there is a specific size someone would like, please ask.
Vector art by Tim Dallinger. Original photo taken by Jeff at the LSU Tennessee game:

I love using these for my phone backgrounds.
I've gotten alot of people compliment them to which I refer them to here

Is there a good vector tutorial that you recommend, tim?

You ran this through either Vector Magic, Adobe, or Corel, right?
For anyone who wants to know how to do real hand-traced vector images, here are a couple of good sites. Von Glitschka is one of the best.

If you just want to do the type of thing that's posted here, go buy Vector Magic. You just put an image in, pick your settings, and pick your colors, and the computer automatically does it for you.

Just keep in mind that hand-traced vectors will always look better than automatically generated vectors (notice all the spots, "blurred" details, and jagged lines, in the image above).

Yes and no. Most of the work is done by hand on hardcopy with ink. As I have described before, my process is as follows:
1. Find the desired image
2. Render it to eliminate the background
3. Posterize the image- this is a key step. If you just use two colors, you lose a lot of the detail. I usually pick 7-9.
4. Individually decide which color to make each area. Clean up the edges of the sections. This is the hardest part which I do with pens by hand.
5. Use a program to convert bitmap to vector
Sometimes I will repeat step 4 and 5 several times depending on the image.
The jagged edges you refered to are a result of the conversion process.
I have both a printed copy of my progress and the original photo and look back and forth between the images to try to capture most of the detail.
When I take shortcuts, like just bitmap to vector scans, it speeds the process. However, I feel the final image suffers. Sometimes I will do this though depending on what I have planned for the final image.
There are likely easier ways to create vector art but this is my method. I don't know if Vector Magic will give you similar images; I don't use a tutorial and taught myself by practice.

Ah, gotcha. I was a little confused because the numbers and helmet look identical to something VM would generate, but at the same time some features, like the bright spot on his triceps, didn't.

You have a good eye. Admittedly, I didn't really clean the LSU on the helmet, the top of his number, the shadow around his armpit and edge of leg shadow.
Busted on finishing the image with shortcuts. Folks here are keeping me honest!

I've been considering putting starting a site to showcase some of my work.
I know you have website. Do you have any suggestions? Pros/cons? Provider recommendations?
Thanks

looks awesome, but i was wondering if you purposely made his pants a brown shade instead of gold like the helmet etc.?
Posted on 10/20/10 at 3:38 pm to ChadJones4Heisman
Vectors look best when there is a shadow. The brown was used on the pants for the yellow shadow. If you notice, it also used on the helmet. The most impressive images come from the use of these shadow elements to give an image depth.
So yes, the brown was on purpose. Perhaps I did not capture the shadow accurately though if that was not clear.

I use flickr to host my photography. I pay for the pro service because it lets me know where people see my work and what they search to find my work. Its awesome.

I currently have a pro account with photobucket. However, I was considering purchasing a domain name specifically for my work.

I need to do this, I need a website badly but i just don't want to put time and money in it right now.

Tim,
I use a company Web.com, and it's pretty much point and click, unlimited pages, and pretty user friendly for folks who don't know how to write HTML. It is the cheapest company I could find, $10.00 a month, if you don't use their advertising service. If you allow them to push your site on Google, Bing, etc it costs $19.00 a month.
I hope this helps, I can't fark worth a fark but I could at least pass what I know along.

It depends, if you just want to showcase your work go to deviantART LINK and set up a page.
As for a site, think about what you are going to be useing it for and what you want it 1.to be or become in the future and 2.what you want it do for you.
As for me, my site is close for the moment (overhaul) and I use DA so that everyone can go and have a look (showcase as you said). I don't put everything up on DA, mostly just the wallpapers.
