Dennis Dodd's piece on CBSSports.com is about beating the number one rated team. The link around the middle of the article shows that LSU has only beaten the number one rated team twice. Does that sound right?

Well, we'd have to run the table to beat Boise.

One time was Florida in 1997 when Faulk ran wild on the Gators. Not sure about the other. Florida 2007 maybe?

thats probably right.. teams dont play the #1 team in the country very often.. considering a conference can go years without having a team ranked #1.. and then it changes throughout the year.. and then, the #1 team in the country doesnt lose very often..

It kind of pisses me off that LSU gave two schools a win over #1 in 2007.

USC was #1 that week. I remember because of the loudest I have ever heard TS after they announced the USC loss.

Sounds right. I know Florida in Tiger Stadium in 97 was the first time. Ohio State was probably the second.

We were #1 in the AP poll though.

How many times has LSU played the #1? How many times have they played the #1 when they stood a reasonable chance of beating them?

Wasn't Ole Miss #1 once when we beat them in the 60's?

No. I think they were number 2 once.

I remember Florida in 97. No one had a clue we even had a snowball's chance to win that game. Was out of town at a golf resort. Was out on the driving range with one of my buddies hitting balls and lost track of time and then realized the game had started. We went back to the condo, walked in and asked "What's the score?" When they said 21-0 LSU", I remember my exact response was.."Don't be shitting me.. Really, what's the score."
