Baptiste Collette (Venice) Duck Hunting Question

I'm planning on making a trip to Venice for the duck season opener Nov. 13th. We don't have a place to stay so we were thinking we'd just camp somewhere. Has anyone ever camped off of Baptiste Collette? Is there any area that people usually set up camp?

Not much public land in that area. I know people that set up camp downriver by the Pass A Loutre WMA

TONS and TONS of public land off Baptiste, however there is quite a bit of private there to you MUST know where you are or you will get in BIG trouble especailly opening day. There are some natrual Chenieres off Emmeline that I have shot rabbits off of that would be great to camp on. Of course there is the VEnice Inn and Lighhouse Lodge also.

Sure about that? I have two freinds that are down fishing that are in the Venice Inn as I type this.

Thanks for the replies. I know the area pretty for hunting but I've never camped there. One of the reasons we want to camp is to avoid running the river while its still dark out. I'm thinking we can just pull into one of the cuts on the west side of baptiste and find a camping spot.

This really isn't necessary and is a big expense for a small boat. I would just hold up at the jump until a workboat is running for baptiste and piggy back behind them. If you don't want to wait, you could run up the westbank to Getty oil and check traffic on the VHF (67) before you shoot across on the compass.

This is how you die on the river duck hunting. Anyone that has ever tried to get back to the dock in fog where you can't see the trolling motor on the front of your boat would tell you to NEVER risk it. Your life is too valuable. I have had the torture of following a crew boat back in the river in fog with less than 15' visibilty. You have to follow on your nose smelling deisel and where the wake is. Even that is difficult in white out conditions.
If there is fog either have radar or wait it out. We have radar and still won't go out in bad fog, we use it only if we get stuck down river and the fog rolls in.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but after doing this for 30 years, no radar and fog equals death sooner or later.

You can tell from the young guns and us older guys.
Now,if you ever ran on a compass in the fog and just idled, you would know that you would end up on the same bank you started at. WHY! I know, but lets see if some of these young guys know why!

Hammer if you have faith in your radar, know how to use it, and know the area you can run in black out fog in relative safety. There are also cheaper read only AIS that increase the safety factor. Do what you feel comfortable doing.
Fishfighter, your right I must be too young bc I don't know what the frick you are doing wrong. I have a gyrocompass on my boat, so I know it points true. Maybe your are thinking I don't factor in the rivers current but that won't turn you 180 degrees it just sets you down. Please educate me. I concede.

I am VERY comfortable with my radar and also have an AIS system installed. However I am just not that mad at the ducks anymore. I really like to shoot and hunt them don't get me wrong, but I won't go in a true "white out" no matter how much I like my radar it just isn't worth it. However I will go in moderate fog conditions with radar.
My response was mainly stated at the poster that said "just run a compass bearing". I have done that and while I won't tell others what to do, you sure won't catch me doing that. This is coming from someone in the olden days that used to have a notebook with compass headings and amount of time it took to get from one point on the river to another at a certain RPM. I just won't do that anymore, anyone that has tried it before will understand why. In Venice no matter how big your boat is there is always MUCH bigger out there.

I try to stay out of the river when it gets foggy. One time, I got stuck at southwest pass in the fog and had to idle to Venice. It took like 4 hours. The fog will play tricks on your eyesight and mind. Have been navigating that river for a long time.
As far as Baptise, there is a lot of parish land in there that can be hunted. Best bet is to get you a map (from Belle Chasse at one of the parish buildings) and check out spots to camp. I would advise against camping on private land.

Ok for ya'll young guys for the answer of why one will land back on the same bank they left running on a compass at idle.
Very simple answer is that your boats motor tork will pull the boat to the right at idle. Giving enough distance, the boat will make a complet circle. Don't belive me? Hold your wheel in one place and idle away from a dock. Don't move it. The boat will circle back.
Now running on radar. Yes, I do, but I went to school to learn how to use a radar.

Bro, my boat is twin screw. I got one left turn one right turn prop. My stern don't walk to either side.
