BERKELEY, Calif. -- In its latest move to cut costs, the University of California, Berkeley announced plans Tuesday to eliminate four intercollegiate sports, including baseball, and end financial support of its championship men's rugby team.

I wonder if any other D1 schools will have to follow this path.

They were in a really bad financial hole last year and the ad had basically already layed out the worst case scenario. I don't know how they're doing now though

I can't believe they can't get enough booster or donations to keep the baseball program running. I can understand cutting other sports but schools should keep the Football, basketball, and baseball programs.

This is actually more suprising than them cutting baseball.

Baseball isn't as big in other parts of the country as it is in the south. I know LSU fans would never see this as a thinkable option but many schools can't get people to watch the games.

this.

But they have such a strong alumni backing that I think they'll be able to maintain pseudo varsity status.

quote:

The commercial sponsors who came to the Cal Athletic Department through their involvement in Cal Rugby may well back out of supporting Cal sports as a whole. So the dropping of rugby as a varsity sport clearly doesn’t save the University of California any money. And it will likely cost the cash-strapped University hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost sponsorship and quite possibly lost donations.

This is huge, particularly with rugby becoming an Olympic sport. Cal should be OK here, as they have a strong alumni base to pull from, in addition to love from USA Rugby.

Title IX, its a bitch. They should never cut mens baseball and leave some girl sport such as womens basketball.

I understand that reaction - and when more men than women are interested in participating it doesn't seem about equal opportunity BUT many football programs are spending way above their means to compete with the few programs at the top that actually generate money

Cutting Baseball from a BCS conference school does seem a crime especially considering the success the Pac10 and the state of California in general has had in that sport.

College baseball is horrible. I still can't get over how popular it is down here.
