Tea Party Could Form Third Party By 2012

Interesting stuff here.

quote:

If Republicans neglect the concerns of Tea Party activists, the group could break off to form a third party as early as 2012, warned Republican Senator John Thune.

Thune, who is considering a presidential run, said if Republicans manage to take back the Congress next month, they will have to work quickly to deliver results to voters.

"If we do not govern according to our principles and if we don't follow through on the things that we say we're going to do, I think the Tea Party–I think there will be a third party in this country," Thune said on C-SPAN Newsmakers.

He applauded Tea Party candidates running for office this year as energetic and driven and said their concerns coincide "with what many of us who are there want to see done."

But the chairman of the Republican Policy Committee said the Senate would be very different considering "many of the candidates that are running on both sides this year are people who maybe don't have long resumes or experience in politics or government ... but are very motivated."

"We're going to have a lot of new people. And a lot of the people who got to the Senate in many cases ran campaigns that were about a very–a very distinct agenda," Thune said. "There are going to be a lot of new faces and probably some pretty strongly-held views. And we'll see how that works."

He tamped down expectations for a Republican wave election in November, saying Democrats are fighting hard.

"I do think that you can get expectations really high, and I hope that those expectations can be met," he said. "I think it's a longer shot in the Senate."

Thune hinted he would decide about a presidential run by early 2011 and said the results of the midterm elections could affect the political landscape for his party.

Only because it represents a power struggle within the GOP. DeMint & Coburn have been leading the charge for well over a year, with others like Thune & Hensarling also in support. Palin & Gingrich & Armey are offshoots who aren't really party insiders anymore, but do a lot of public commentary in the media and with campaigns. Ryan & Gregg & Pawlenty & Cantor et. al. are trying to angle for party leadership by wooing independent voters while also being architects of the long-term entitlement reform plan.

What makes this so great is that it gives us hope that the GOP will one day be purged of fiscal hypocrites. It's obviously not a foregone conclusion, but there is a glimmer of hope that things are dramatically improving within the party.

But the social conservatives will remain in control of the GOP, right?

I don't expect politicians to embrace fiscal conservatism in the majority, as its counter productive to the business of govt. And the business of govt... the growth of its power and scope... and the lining of their own pockets in the process... is all that career politicians care about, regardless of the letter behind their name.

Here's a newsflash for you: they haven't been in control of the party since the 90's, unless you count national security conservatives as social/religious conservatives.

That McCain was nominated in 2008, and would have been nominated in 2000 but for the appearance of Bush, should tell you a lot.

Supporters of Rumsfeld & Giuliani & Gingrich are not the same crowd as the supporters of Romney & Huckabee & Tancredo. The fact that Romney, Huckabee, & Tancredo find themselves in very strong disfavor among Republicans shows that the party is not controlled by social conservatives.

Well all I know is the Montana and Texas GOP (and probably more) platform wants to make homosexuality illegal. So you're telling me social conservatives don't hold huge sway within the GOP?

How many voters do you think have read their state's political party official platforms? Do you think these documents reflect the views of a majority of their members?

It was stupid of them to write that into the documents, but party committees tend to be of a very different makeup than the general membership on both sides.

Well first of all, it's a vague term. I actually consider myself socially conservative, but that can mean a lot of different things politically. I oppose gay marriage for instance, but it is barely a consideration for me in political elections.

Social conservatives hold some sway in all elections, including those involving Democrats, but that just makes them a voting subset like every other group that politicians have to pander to. It doesn't mean they're running anything besides lobbying to get a few crumbs thrown their way.

I don't know anything about GOPers from MT or TX trying to make homosexuality illegal, but I can 100% guarantee you that any politician involved with a campaign such as that would not be a legitimate contender for national party leadership.

Nobody likes Falwell. Nobody likes Buchanan. Nobody likes Tancredo. To the extent that anyone likes figures like Palin & Bachmann, it is solely because they want to bring the hammer down on federal spending while keeping national security a priority in Reaganite fashion.

If you don't like homosexuality go to a country that doesn't accept it. Iran or someplace nice like that.

I know. That is one thing that gives me hope about this country. Young people, overwhelmingly, don't give a shite about these antiquated social issues. Thank God.

Do they have a gay character on them or something?
I watch plenty of Disney when my niece and nephew visit and I've never seen anything like this.
I knew this man when I was growing up that wouldn't let his children watch "Different Strokes" because they had interracial families on it.
