My Point of View

The thread about the "fans" leaving before the game was over got me to thinking.
Growing up in northeast Louisiana I was ALWAYS a TIGER fan. I would listen to the games on an old AM radio back in the late 70's and early 80's. I still remember listening to the LSU/USC game and crying as a child. Once I reached High School, I took a healthy dose of ridicule from my classmates and friends over my love of LSU. You see, they were all La Tech and NLU fans who couldn't understand my desire to root for a team from south Louisiana. But I was fortunate, I had a family friend who had attended LSU and often took me to home games.
When I graduated from High School, I went straight to work and never attended college. Still, I remained a loyal fan who followed the TIGERS every chance and continued to travel to Baton Rouge for at least a couple of home games each year. Like many of you, I lived through the bad times but never swayed in my support (even when Tech and NLU were fielding decent teams)
I remember after LSU won the 2003 BCS Championship, I would often times find myself thinking...... I can't believe they did it! However, shortly after that Championship season I began to notice my old friends, the ones who had given me so much grief about being an LSU fan now wearing Purple and Gold. Their vehicles suddenly adorned with LSU stickers and plates. Many began making the trip to Baton Rouge for home games. All of a sudden it was the "in" thing to be....... A Tiger Fan.
You wanna know who those folks leaving the stadium early are? I know who they are and they know who they are. Johnny Come Lately, who has no idea what a real LSU fan feels each and every day. Sometimes I wish LSU had never had such success on the football field. That way I wouldn't have to deal with all these band wagon fans who have come as so much trash after the great years we've had lately.
But then again, I couldn't do that to any LSU football team. I love it too much. That team, that stadium, that band, that student section...............

Too many people only worried about the game as an excuse to get drunk tailgating, and not as a reason to go watch LSU play football.

This.
Louisiana has a serious drinking problem and everyone makes light of it.
On the LSU note, I'd rather have 100,000 very loyal fans who have tickets to games than 500,000 lukewarm fans who are scrambling to get tickets when we win and end up pushing out 40,000 or so fans that are loyal that would have had tickets if they hadn't been scooped up by the bandwagoners.
I live in Alabama. If I didn't work on weekends, I would set aside part of my income to make the trip 7-8 times a year to Baton Rouge on weekends to attend home games. I really would. It would be a blast. And, I promise you this: I wouldn't leave at halftime. There are probably a lot of guys like me that for one reason or another can't attend, or if they could, can't get tickets because they are taken up by bandwagoners.

I've been going to games since I was a kid. They have been a life long passion for me, cut me and I bleed purple and gold. I am a member of TAF and regularly travel to a couple of away games a year, too. And guess what......when I get ready to leave Tiger Stadium and watch the second half on T.V. at my tailgate spot, I do it. I am a grown arse man and I pretty much do what I damn well please. No I won't give up my tickets for you either, although I might raid your ice chest for a free beer walking back to my spot. BTW, thanks for that whoever you are.

I agree.
Some of the fans today remind me of Alabama fans.
I live among the Gumps.
5 years ago, you couldn't find a Big Al, or Alabama flag or that God forsaken SCARLET LETTER, flying anywhere. They were not a good team and people here packed it in.
Enter Saban (Satan, whatever).
Now every tom, dick, and harry is proudly flying their SCARLET LETTER!
Fair weather fans--that's what they are--and I tell them how I feel.
My Purple and Gold has flown through Curley Hallman, Mike Archer and the rest.
Either Support 'em or jump off the bandwagon. I'd rather sit with 50,000 loyal fans tnan 92,000 lukewarm ones.
Feel free to flame away.

alot of truth in this post! Its the same way over here in Lake Charles. Before the 2003 NC, nobody sported LSU gear here except for alumni. Now its everywhere. BUT, that is the price you pay for success. Gotta take the good with the bad.

We should have 2nd string fans...
You stay outside until people start to leave. For every one that leaves, we let a backup in to take their place. That way, these luke-warm johnny come latelys get replaced with a fresh set of lungs late in the game when we need them.

Assholes that steal on game day should be punched in the throat....hard!

i agree 100% with the concept of band-wagon fans. But i'm from north louisiana, Bossier and now live in south louisiana. i hear people say all the time that people in north louisiana aren't "real" fans. I just dont get it...i've always been an LSU fan. I have several aunts/uncles who have been season ticket holders for years and have always attended games. So i'm from north louisiana and all of my family is from north louisiana and we have always been "real" fans.

I graduated from NLU in the early 90s, and most of my friends were all LSU fans...So I don't agree with the post at all.... We were lsu fans during the darkest times of LSU football...

I've never had the privilege to attend an LSU game in my life. This week I'll turn 37, and my wife got me LSU tickets, and I'll be damned if I leave before the game is over. I'm driving 10 hrs to watch the ULM game, and I expect it will be a blowout, but I look forward to taking in the atmosphere and living out a dream I've had since I was a kid.

another thread about this... good lord, I hate fans leaving early as well but no one cares about an opinion on a message board. If people want to leave, they will leave...
