We are in this together, or not

Driving through the Midwest today I got to listen to some local knucklehead DJ’s talk about how LSU “sucked” and even the fans “hate” the team.
I am part of LSU. I have dreamt there, failed there, and had the greatest moments of my life there. I left that place with two degrees that have enabled me to live a life I never imagined. My first degree was in engineering, I know what those oaks look like at two am after studying ten hours straight. I know what it feels like to want something so bad and pay the price to get it. This place and I will be joined forever.
Football was always something I looked forward too, and enjoyed even when we lost. I enjoyed the camaraderie and the feeling that we were all in it together, win or lose. I had picked my side of the battle and would go down swinging with them every time.
Now I don’t know you people, don’t think I want to, but I feel like most of you don’t get it. You don’t understand the experiences that are felt on that campus outside of a game.
These kids have their successes and failures displayed for your enjoyment, and you despise them for it.
Well, men of LSU, some of us are with you no matter what, never forget that because we know what it takes and will enjoy your victories the most
And sadly some will never understand a word of this. You are either a TIGER or you’re not. If not, stop embarrassing my alma mater. We, THE TIGERS, would rather not have you around. You have my pity.

This is what I resent most...that outsiders are picking up on the fact that many fans "hate the team".
Yeah, yeah, I know....the criticism is aimed at the coaches...blah blah blah. It is just sad that this is how we are perceived.
Well said, OP....I agree with you and feel your pain.

This evening on the Experts on ESPN, Pat Forde said that LSU was the unhappiest ever fanbase of a 4-0 team!
Of course every body on the show had a chuckle! I think what started as an anti-Miles sentiment is getting portrayed as an anti-LSU sentiment around the country. and everybody is buying it.

As a fellow alumnus, I raise my glass to you.
Here's to stately oaks...

I've always lived by the idea that I could complain about the team all I wanted when around other LSU fans, but I would never say anything overly negative about the team when around other SEC fans. There's pride in being a man of LSU.

It's because that's what it is. You can't tear down everything about the man without tearing down the program.
I have been saying this for two years now; LSU 'Fans' are burning down the village to 'save' the village.
People blame 'lack of development' or 'poor coaching' for JJ's struggles but he does great until he steps on the field under the scrutiny of Tiger Nation, maybe WE have caused the RUINNATION of JJefferson AND JLee's confidence.
I am ashamed of Tiger fans more than I would have ever believed imaginable.
I always thought bleeding purple and gold was special, I thought it was unique in that we could have teams Like USC come into Tiger Stadium in the late 70's when they really were a dynasty and scare the living daylights out of them despite having significantly inferior talent.
The intimidation came from the fans and while some of those traditions and characteristics remain, WE the FANS are becoming the NATIONAL JOKE, not Les Miles and we the fans will have to suffer the consequences long after we run him off.
In the end, Les Miles wins >75% of his games and has a national title. If he wants another head coaching job, he'll get it.
We on the other hand might just be destroying the two greatest things LSU has ever had going for it; the venue and the fan's reputation as the best in college football.
Welcome to the new(perception)reality, Miles is goofy but LSU fans are completely whacked out nut jobs.
Hey five star QB, come to LSU so we can BOO your but off the field if you struggle as a Freshmen, or sophomore, or junior, or well ever really.
By the way OP, great post!

Excellent point.
A friend of mine relayed this to me earlier today:
quote:
"The player is obviously underperforming intentionally, and fans booing him will make him play better. Moronic."
Said friend has taken upon himself to cuss out the assholes booing the QB. At least the assholes in his vicinity in the North end zone. But he has a damn fine point. Booing the shite out of JJ isn't likely to make him play better. Booing the shite out of JL in 2008 didn't make him play better either. Maybe it's time to boo the shite out of the people who keep booing the shite out of our QBs.

As much as I shudder when I think it, and may lightning not strike me as I type it, but this whole LSU football thing was almost more fun, from a community standpoint, when we were "just" going 8-3 every year and happy to make a decent bowl game. It seemed like back in those days, when we were more of the underdog, everyone banded together for the common cause, which was to yell the Tigers to victory. Sure there was bitching, especially after tough losses, but the troops rallied and started looking forward to the next chance to see the Tigers play. The venom that gets spewed now is just out of hand, especially when there have been NO LOSSES.
On Monday at work, I had to listen to a broad tell me how miserable she was at the game watching the Tigers play...A GAME WE WON OVER A TOP 25 TEAM. What have we become? I don't like it. I am glad that I am not allowing others to steal my joy from the Tigers winning games...but it would be much funner if others had the same attitude. Sadly, they don't. Some fanbase we have...

Reminds me of the famous scene from Casablanca when they drown out the Germans by singing the French national anthem.

I agree with everything in this entire thread except this. Miles is the laughing stock of every fanbase in America as well as the entire national media.
If anyone booed a kid by me we'd have serious issues. That shite is never acceptable and YES it was directed toward JJ, not the coaches.

You got it ValleyCat. What I wouldn't give to be in Tiger Stadium this Saturday. Postgraduate requirements, then internships and fellowships and, finally, jobs, have kept us from our home state and our beloved LSU (except for sporadic trips back home over the last two decades ... during which trips our relatives perpetually keeping our seats in Tigah stadium warm get the boot for at least a game).
No, we old "foogies" never settled for "mediocrity" as the instant gratification gang chirps these days ... mediocrity didn't get you your degrees, nor our multiple degrees either. LSU didn't always win 'em all during our years there, but they were always our LSU Tigahs and without being blind to our team's shortcomings, we still loved our Tigahs and we loved 'em all the more for choosing to don the P&G in the first place.
But I digress... back to anxiously awaiting our our next trip home to both our beloved south Louisiana and Tigah stadium on Saturday night! Retirement to our home state can't possibly come soon enough!! :sigh:
