I'm glad you don't, however it is slaughtering the pronunciation of the word.

If you listen to any of the Alexandria radio stations, they have several advertisements that are supposed to be "Cajun". What these idiots don't know is that they don't sound anything like Cajuns. And their mispronunciation of lagniappe in these ads is the worst.

Prime Example: 100.3 F.M. has the "lan-yap lunch" show. I want to call every day and correct the DJ's pronunciation. It's like fingernails down a chalk board to me.

Okay, done on my soap box.

you probably shouldn't say it more often. Because anybody that hears you say boo-koo will think you're an idiot.

On the contrary, I don't know of anyone who actually says "Bo-koo." It's practically a slang word anyway, so it doesn't really even matter.

This is where it comes from. Vietnam was a French colony and they introduced the word "beaucoup" into the Vietnamese lexicon. The Vietnamese couldn't pronounce it like you are supposed to and would say "Boo-Koo" which was in turn brought back to the US by returning servicemen during the Vietnam War.

seeing the amount of vowel sounds that vietnamese have to pronounce in their daily language, i'd like to see some evidence of this.

In Winn Parish they pronounce Bayou Beaucoup as "BUCK-ooo".

I think I was an adult before I saw a map that showed that it was Beaucoup.

all I can tell you is that I have talked to Vietnam vets that recalled the Vietnamese locals pronouncing it that way and that it became common slang. I do know that Stanley Kubrick went to great lengths to make the movie "Full Metal Jacket" as realistic as possible including the use of the vietnamese prostitute saying the african american fellow's "Alabama Black Snake" was "too Boo-Koo."

Just like FUBAR became slang during WW2.

pronounced sum ought instead for saying something. example: She is forty sum ought years old.

I'm pretty sure it's "some odd", not "sum ought"

I actually heard the manager of the KFC in Amite call "shrimp," "skrimps." I have never heard shrimp called this before. I've heard "srimp," "swoomps," "shrimpses," but never "skrimps."

I cringe when people say "I-rack" or "I-ran". No wonder we have trouble with these countries. It's more like "ear-rock" and "ear-ron".

When it comes to places, the local pronunciation is always correct, at least according to the late-Dr. Milton Newton.

I enjoy when old cajun people refer to the kitchen sink as the kitchen zinc.

My family is from Avoyelles and all of the older folks do not say "Tha" in Thunder, Thursday, etc. Instead it's tunder, tursday....

agreed, I was not clear, my bad. What I should have said was I give "a lot" of latitude for people not from the heart of acadiana. I would be lying if I said I do not notice when people come from outside Louisiana and show zero disregard for the pronunciation of names and places. the boo coo and lon yop thing, does not get under my skin.
