Here goes...I'll try my best...
1. Find something you want to draw...
2. Draw it and fill in the backing color...
3. Add a shade...
4. Add a high light...
5. Add "front" color...
6. Shade over the front color...
7. Highlights over front color...
8. Add stroke...
9. Add a detail or two...
That's how I do it, any questions fire away...

Looks nice and easy. I can't see what you did between steps 7 & 8( add stroke).
I think my biggest problem is making things more complicated than they have to be.
I noticed also the Whiskey theme continues!

It's simple. It's not easy. When someone is very good at this, like Orphan, it looks effortless. Give it a try. It will likely give you a better appreciation for his work.

Stroke is a tool in photoshop where you add a border/edge to your image, you control how thick and how feathered you want your edge to be.
Notice the image before there is no noticeable black outline of the bottle.

Nice, I hate the pen tool, because I can never get it to do what I want. I have a question. when starting from an image, like a picture of a person, football player, etc. what are your steps? do you draw it out on the computer as you go. Because your Peterson picture was looking very clean and sharp.

Sometimes I have to take a step back and scale back what I want to do.

These are from a tut I did pre 2007 for a gaming squad. Most on there are Whiskey drinkers.

Thank you, it took a long time to get to this point.

Learning the pen tool is a must IMO. Yes I do draw it out.
