What was the point of returning the Heisman, then?
It's called cutting your losses and moving on. It probably saved him the embarrassment of being stripped of the award.

Did you actually expect him to admit to all those things? I know Reggie is a Saint and people try to give him a pass, but the dude was selfish beyond belief in college and its not going to hurt him one bit. He lost his heisman trophy by giving it back and that's about it.
He's making his $ and no matter how many charitable donations he gives, it won't change the fact he was taking money and basically causing USC to cheat. He really cares so much for USC it seems all of a sudden.

I would have done the same thing in 20 different lifetimes. Money talks, especially in SoCal.

I'm under the impression he did it to help the Heisman trust. If he waited till their decision it would of been a lose/lose for them.
Take it away and people would have complained
Leave it to Reggie and people would of complained about the decision...
So, basically he took money from the trust to help them out of the tough decision.

Reggie is full of s**t. Great football player, but man, I can smell that junk all the way from here.

Just keep denying everything Reggie, it's worked so far.

As long as Vince Young doesn't get the award then Reggie will forever be linked to the Heisman in 2005.

Reggie is just shameless. Man up and place the blame on yourself. All this bs about the players not getting paid is garbage. Last I remember it cost me 50k to go to college in the early 1990's. How much are they saving now with the scholarships? 50k-100k or more? Quit making excuses, you're not a victim, you're a beneficiary. Had there not been this big money game of college football, Reggie would be doing some anonymous job making 30k per year.

I think selfish is the wrong word...he did alot of this to help his parents. When I was 18, and some people started offering me this kind of money, it would have be tough to turn down.

To everyone ^ above.
You need to think a little harder.
There are severe ramifications if he admits guilt.
Lawsuits from those affected by his actions. People and institutions do love to get litigious these days esp. when a person of means admit wrong doing.
The biggest reason.
Let me see anyone admit in public of taking large sums of money tax free!
Yeah. Lets invite a arse reaming from the IRS on ourselves.
I'm sure someone smarter than me can come up with some more reasons than I. It's never as cut and dry as we may think.

On the whole student athlete issue I weigh in that for the money they are making for the schools they are getting crumbs relatively. I would have no problem with them getting substantially more reward for their contribution.
As far as opportunity it is an evil collusion that the NFL and NCAA have designed. The NFL will not take players until they are 3 years out of high school. They get to use the NCAA as a minor league proving ground. The NCAA gets to retain it's biggest stars even if they are NFL ready. It's a win-win for them but not for the player.
Use Patrick Peterson as an example. He would have been a 1st Rd draft pick THIS year but he is ineligible. Yes, he can play and enhance his value. Yes also that he can tear his knee up completely or have a Chad Jones/Byrd accident and never see an NFL dime. He should have the opportunity to earn his market value freely.

Ask the marketing guy he allegedly took 300k from as incentive to sign with him after leaving USC, but then reneged on signing with him or paying back the 300k, if Reggie was selfish.

You know he doesn't have to admit guilt for those things to happen right?
The IRS could send an agent to his house today and with all the evidence Yahoo Sports, and the NCAA, have compiled they would have a pretty good case against him and that's before even interviewing Bush, Lake etc.
Same thing for lawsuits.
Posted on 9/17/10 at 11:01 am to tigerguy121
Reggie settle the a lawsuit with the agents so he cant talk. if he admits guilt it will cost him major money i would imagine.
Posted on 9/17/10 at 12:01 pm to goatmilker
Or he could just not say a thing

Well that would have Perry Mason shaking in his boots

receipts, written statements from people interviewed by both? There was a book written about it.
No non-disclosure agreement btw Bush and Lake or whomever would hold up against a IRS investigation. You don't get to tell the IRS "sorry signed an agreement not to talk about this"
You get that the IRS, and lawsuits don't usually wait for someone to actually admit they did something wrong?
That it's because someone is hiding something the IRS gets involved?
Really it's just a matter of desire on the governments part. If the IRS wanted to get Bush for not paying taxes on the money he received they would have very little trouble doing so.
