Why do they have those picket fence things on beaches?

You know, those little pieces of wooden picket fences about 100 to 300 yards or so in from the beach near grass areas and stuff. They're about four feet high, maybe six to eight feet long and flimsy. They are placed here and there. Why do they have those things?

Does it help protect the dunes against beach erosion?

But they are not linked together. Maybe in the space of sity block there might be 20 or 30. Maybe like the other poster suggested- to protect from erosion.

Never really thought much of it until I saw some a few weeks ago.

Snow drift fences aren't connected yet serve the same purpose

They actually give the sand something to build on. They are to build the dunes back usually after a storm surge. If you will notice the sand will eventually bury them.

Not so much erosion protection. More to encourage sediment deposition.
