This is a pretty kick arse looking rifle. The upper has been selling for $700 and Cabela's is selling the package for $899.

I'm considering a sales tax free acquisition.

I admit I know almost nothing about assault weapons so this might be dumb question, but what caliber is it?

5.7x28

Basically a sub-machine gun round developed by FHN that is also shot out of the FN five seven pistol. Supersonic round that is armor piercing with the right ammo but unfortunately civilians can't buy those.

FN makes some great weapons. I have the FN .40.

I really want a SCAR-H (308)

That gun was just featured in American Rifleman. If I won the lottery the feds would come a knocking because I would go on one hell of a shopping spree

Same here. They'd think I was assembling a militia.

I already told the wife that if we build a house it will have a vault room for my toys.

Again, showing my stupidity, is that close to a .223 or .17?

Closer to a .17HMR than to a .223 It fires a bullet weighing around 30 grains at close to 2800 ft/s. These pictured are 40grains.

I'm thinking closer to a .223

6mm=.24
7mm=.28

If that's accurate then a 5mm=.20

The .223 is actually a 5.56x45mm so I'm saying closer to a .223 round than the 17 HMR in size

The HMR is usually a 17-20 grain bullet at 2500 fps / 250 ft/lbs
The .223 is usually 55 gr at 3200+ fps / 1300 ft/lbs

5.57x28 is usually 30gr at 2400 fps (23gr @ 2800) and 400 ft-lbs.And closer to 17 in speed/power

so really somewhere in the middle

It is a bottlenecked cartridge that is comparable to the .22 Hornet or .22 K-Hornet, and uses a [b]5.7-mm (.224 in) bullet.

None - .22 LR

.223 is prob cheapest. I've never seen .17 in bulk and the 5.57 is hard to find and therefore not cheap
