Thanks to Ethan Conley for the info...he asked LA Tech AD Van De Velde a couple of questions and got the following responses...

When asked if Tech was interested in any other conference besides Conference USA:
quote:

We've had some consultants that have talked to us about the Big 12 conference, but I don't think the Big 12 is interested in doing anything right now. I think the conference that we're looking at is we're looking to play up, so Conference USA would fit that, and the Big 12 would fit that.

What about the Sun Belt or the MAC:
quote:

No, none that you mentioned there.

Regarding Tech's plans:
quote:

We've had an ongoing communication with Conference USA. But at the same time we want to be a good partner with the WAC. There's been no secret that we've tried to improve our program to a level where we might have an opportunity that would put us in a conference that would have a closer geographic footprint. At the same time we want to be a loyal, solid partner to the WAC conference. So both those things continue to go on, and we've had an ongoing dialogue with other conferences that might fit that description, and we feel like we positioned ourselves well. But we're also interested in what's going to happen with the WAC, and we want to be a good partner there until something closer to home does open up.

You have to appreciate Tech's self-esteem by actually discussing the Big 12.

Yeah I read that earlier and got a good laugh. I like the geographic reference. I guess having two conference schools in the same state, one 35 minutes away, isn't geographically correct to LTU.

Tech would give LSU a run for their money on the field and become the premier public university in LA if this were to happen.

Tech's people have called the Sun Belt already fwiw. I don't see how they're a viable Big XII candidate, why would they want to add the Ruston market and 8k fans per game?

The only scenario I could see Tech getting a Big XII invite is if Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M all leave.

It is more likely for the Big XII to dissolve after the next round of defections than it is for Tech to become a member. What the frick are you people smoking tonight?

Why would a big conference want Tech? They've got plans for better facilities, but they have shitty ones as of now. They're in a shitty market, Ruston is about 20k people, they don't fill their stadium up, and they don't compete in a weak WAC conference.

If you're looking for teams ready to make the jump to a major (current BCS affiliation for my definition here) conference, I'd take any of the following before Tech off the top of my head: TCU, Boise, New Mexico, USM, UCF, BYU, UAB, East Carolina, Tulane, Rice, UH.

The Big 12 things is some what ridiculous. Only way its plausible is if the conference loses more members and we see a totally different restructured big 12.

I think Tech gets a bit too much shite for the attendance. In a town of 20,000 people Tech averaged 20,000 in attendance last year. Keep in mind Tech gets close to nothing as far as opposing teams fans since the closest conference school is New Mexico State. In a more regional conference, the attendance would be much better.

Football ticket sales = $1.4 million

All sports ticket sales (including football) = $1.6 million

Direct Institutional Support (taxpayer subsidy) = $6.4 million

Total home ticket sales as a percent of total revenues = ~10%
