Well, the Saints took Who Dat from LSU... so maybe it's payback time

Ok, call me stupid if you must, but...the New Orleans Saints took the Who Dat chant from LSU? Where did this come from?

As for the later "Who dat?" cheer (Meaning the current one), Ex-Saint Dalton Hilliard is credited in numerous online examinations of the phenomenon for bringing it from Patterson High School to Louisiana State University and then to New Orleans.

Hilliard said he first heard it at the Louisiana Superdome, when his Patterson Lumberjacks team played John Curtis for the 1979 Class 2A state championship.

"There were fans in the stands I can recall saying that," he said.

Those fans, he recalled, comprised a group of Patterson partisans who followed the team, though he'd never heard it at home.

"That was my first time hearing it," said Hilliard, who now runs a regional energy services company based in Houma.

"They were saying, 'Who dat? Who dat? Who dat say they're going to beat those 'Jacks.'"

"I heard it a little bit at LSU, but mostly when I got to the Saints,"

Boat, you need to have a conversation with blueslover, I believe he might have the correct info on the original source.

If you're gonna get out on a technicality, maybe it's because you put the "current" cheer/chant, which....heaven forbid the difference. ugh.

I think you need to maybe visit a wiki page. Like most things in slang, it's been "ripped off" many many times. but spewing around that the Saints ripped it from LSU is just idiocy.

The current who dat chant is what we're talking about here.

LINK

nola.com used the phrase later who dat chant because they were talking about the early jazz who dat earlier in the article.

In the late 1970s fans at Alcorn State University and Louisiana State University picked up on the cheer.[6] By 1983 the cheer had become so popular among fans that the New Orleans Saints organization officially adopted it during the tenure of coach Bum Phillips

Curtis started the who dat cheer in the late 60's FWIW. Every tradition in all of Louisiana football was started in River Ridge.

I will never understand people that view the Saints and Tigers relationship as adversarial.

Maybe a few get upset the Saints success is taking attention away from LSU? I don't know, but you have some fans who like just one of the two. Even SP mentioned it in his book when he wrote of LSU football in New Orleans, "Not everyone is into it."

LSU fans complaining about Saints stealing who dat is equally as dumb as Saints fans complaining LSU "stole" Halftime.
