A contribution of $2,000 will allow TAF to replace a window in Tiger Stadium, which will help preserve and secure the stadium’s future. Those donors who fund the replacement of a window will be permanently recognized around Tiger Stadium for their support.

Seems pretty expensive to me. Does anyone know someone who can give a better quote? Wow!

if the windows have compound bends they are more expensive, but 2000 for each unit is high.

I thought they were doing this without any additional funds from us? Guess not, Alleva is great at turning everything into a TAF fundraiser i'll give him that.

Asbestos, Lead Paint...............

80 - 100 feet in the air.

(I wonder if they can do it from inside the rooms?)

that what i was thinking i'm sure labor and removal is part of the quote but 2000 per unit is still high considering its based off one unit.

I'm going to guess that over half of that is for the "permanent recognition around Tiger Stadium"

This isn't your standard window install project. The window installer has to build 5 stories of scaffolding and install the new windows from the outside because he can't/won't send his guys into the dorm rooms. LSU is paying a big premium for that. The window itself is very expensive. They are bigger than most probably think and they'll be double pane, insulating glass with argon, etc. The windows need a special frame to be installed from the outside. The window design is custom to match the layout and mullions of the existing windows. All of that adds up to more than $2000/window.

They are doing a 12 window mockup before this season, so they are well aware of the actual costs and the $2,000/window is likely based on those bids.

thanks for the info lsu711. it makes sense but its not exactly re inventing the wheel. i've dealt with companies in the past that specialize in unique windows or frames. there prices vary but the savings is eye popping when you buy in bulk so it just surprised me when i heard 2 grand per unit. with the correct machining centers once they got the spects they could produce the windows in a matter of minutes that includes assembly. it a much needed project in my mind so if thats what its gonna cost to improve the cosmetic appearance of the staduim i say go for it.

It would appear that the true value for the money is permanent recognition in the stadium. As a former resident of North Stadium (1977), you could replace most of the windows on a hallway for $2k.

Really? Where did you get this from? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense if the existing windows aren't nor does it make a lot of sense of the rooms aren't meant to be habitable. You cite the contractor won't send his guys into the room as part of the logic for the cost, which means the rooms aren't habitable and the installation has to be done from the outside.

If the rooms are part of the old dorms used by the Athletic Dept. as offices I would be surprised if they were broken, and more surprised at paying for scaffolding (since interior entry would work).

Since I recently had a bid on six completely custom, large (larger that the stadium windows), double pane, insulated, argon filled cantilever (that add to the cost) windows in Baton Rouge, I have some idea what the cost is.

Granted it was ground level, and accessible from both inside and outside, but it was less than half of $2000 (more like one-fourth) per window.

$2000 per window sounds inflated and sounds like it has turned into a money-raiser. I don't have a problem if that is the case as long as it is known what the money will be used for (a trust fund for continuing improvements to TS for example).

That'll get them about 2/3rds of the way up. You can buy scaffolding for the cost to rent an 80 ft boom lift for a week.

According to this LINK the price is actually $4000 per window as a TAF Supporter is providing matching funds for all money contributed to the window replacement fund.

I'm guessing that maybe there must be hidden costs in this project that have yet to be discussed in this thread?

I had an office in tiger stadium for several years. The office right next to mine was boarded up with caution tape and asbestos signs on it.

That is the problem with the windows. My office had a window ac unit but it was jerry rigged so it wouldnt fall through as the window frame was unattached from the cinder block wall.

Shouldn't the FIRST priority in any TS renovation project be to clean up all that damn asbestos?

I think LSU intends to make those rooms habitable one day. If they install low quality windows now, when the rooms are renovated 5/10/20 years down the road, replacing the windows installed today will be as much of a deal breaker as the asbestos removal.

Was it residential? Bonds/insurance required? A lot of factors in play besides elevation and access. State projects are inherently expensive because of the special requirements placed on bidders.

The money raised has to cover total project costs. Architect fees are ~10% of construction costs. If TAF is raising the money, they have salaries and overhead to pay. That all has to be built into the cost per window.

Obviously, they are going to raise more money than they need. Otherwise, the project will never happen. I think $2,000/window is low, but $2,000 plus a $2,000 match would get the job done and I am sure the leftover money will be used for improvements to the stadium. Alleva seems really passionate about the North Stadium area.

I am all for changing out the windows, because they really are an embarrassment to LSU- however, will anything be done with all these dorm rooms with the nice new, energy-efficient windows??? A poster a few months back suggested removing all asbestos and making some nice suites out of the rooms- sounds costly though....
