Anyone have a new update? Are the beaches better since they capped the leak?

I hope so...we are staying in Fort Morgan this weekend and I'm nervous with how off the beaten path it is there won't be a lot of cleanup going on.

Your worst fears will be realized. There will be zero clean up going on there. Silver lining though is there won't be any oil either. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

Yeah I didn't pick the location. Going with the in-laws and apparently they didn't look at map of this place compared to where Gulf Shores is before they booked. It's Gulf Shores Plantation and they thought it was in the heart of Gulf Shores. I tried to talk them out of staying there but they said that they will like not having a lot of people there. I'm the opposite. I like to have a lot of people around so my daughter can play with other kids and also I don't like to drive 30 minutes to the nearest ANYTHING...lol

Then go to Miami. There isn't anyone in Gulf Shores, either. The place is deadsville. Its depressing.

We usually go to Destin with my family there are a lot of people and kids and things to do. We've been going there for about 15 years now. I haven't been to Gulf Shores since I was about 5 so I don't remember much at all.

i got back from gulf shores sunday there are a ton of people flooding into gulf shores trying to get in a last minute vacation.. so many that some condos are going for $1000 more than normal for the week,,, the beaches are cleaner than i have ever seen (they are cleaned every night) and we didnt have any seaweed or oil or jellyfish all week

Cool. Is oil coming in each day? Why are they still having to clean each night?

Well, I live in Gulf Shores and I can assure you that people are definitely not pouring in. It's still very quiet here. No waits for restaurants except maybe the Oyster House. I seriously doubt that they've hiked the prices any as everyone still has vacancies. They are still sifting nightly as we have had alot of seaweed coming in. It's bringing in a few tarballs with it, but that's about it.

At Phoenix III right now! Beaches are clean and white. Bit of seeweed in the water but no oil. Not a whole lot of people which is nice but bad for the businesses. Guy at Winn Dixie said sales are off 70%

Definitely a ghost town by comparison to normal. Were in Phoenix III and there were about 5 people in the pool at peak time yesterday. Manager said they are running about 30-35% occupancy right now. If it wasnt 95 degrees outside you would think it was the off season. Been here a few times during thanksgiving and this is what it feels like

"They are still sifting nightly as we have had a lot of seaweed coming in. It's bringing in a few tarballs with it, but that's about it."

No offense ALTiger, but this is part of the perception problem. You mention "a few tarballs" without ever commenting on the fact that the occasional tarball found is weather hardened and no larger than a quarter. People hear "tarball" and they automatically think of huge thick gooey balls of oil covering the beach. It's tough enough that area businesses have to deal with the media overhyping the disaster without locals further hurting the perception of the beaches by not explaining the difference.

The water is great. Clean as i have ever seen it. They have the double red flags up for some reason but everyone is ignoring that an enjoying the ocean. The FEW tarballs you do see in the sand jeee and there are about the size of a raisin but hard and not gooey at all
