I think they were trying to work the numbers and be able to take a full class, 25-28. The way attrition is going that should not be a problem between now and Feb '11.

That was my tought, too. Couldn't understand how we might be tight on scholly's given the attrition rate of late.

In order to sign a full class, we will need to lose 12-13 players that are on the team now and not a senior.

Explain how that is relevant. Doesn't the answer turn on the # of scholarship players on the roster, not their classification?

Because when you graduate seniors, they are no longer on the roster, freeing up scholarships???

At what point during the year does the team have to be at the 85-scholarship limit? Can LSU sign a full class of recruits in Feb of 2011 (say, 25 players) and the use March, April, May, etc. of 2011 to then trim the roster to 85 or does the number of scholarship players have to be <=85 at the moment the '11 class is signed?

If I'm counting correctly, I think that LSU has 83 players on the roster who are listed on the Rivals signing classes. I'm not sure how many additional scholarships (if any) have been awarded to walk-ons, like maybe a Graff or a Dugas (both seniors), or maybe a Bailey, Stampley, etc.

Only 9 scholarship players are seniors, and if Patrick Peterson leaves for the NFL, that makes 10. So that would leave LSU with 73 scholarship players returning for next year, meaning only 12 scholarships are automatically available for the signing class of February 2011.

Some further attrition can be expected though (many from the 41 freshmen who will be on scholarship this fall, 15 of them being redshirts), and so LSU will sign more than 12, and may also ask some lesser potential recruits to postpone enrollment until after the fall of 2011.

Did I get the math right here?

I think we fall in the 22-25 range. Could be some further attrition in Jan. but I think that's about where we land.

Don't forget about academic casualties, attrition, and assuming that no extra walk ons get a scholly.. as you said, we have 12 scholarships open for this recruiting class.

12 + 4-6 (attrition) + 1 (non-qualifier) + 1-2 (greyshirts or back count) + 1-2 medical hardships

I figure that's how it'd turn out. 20-24 is my guess.
