They didn't say. That came from BP.com by the way.

I guess they'll let it keep running on the kill line. The smaller diameter might restrict the flow rate some.

I don't get it... they are that close with the relief well and the stop it to work on the cap that is just containment. The relief well is the solution. Why not put the top hat back on and drill the damn relief well!?!?!

Can't just slam the rams shut and call it good. They want to gradually shut in the well and watch the pressure steadily rise. That's the test. They can't do that with the rams and evidently they can't do it with the kill line either. They designed this thing to do that with the choke line but the choke line has a leak. So they gotta fix that first and then continue.

For those that keep saying to just contain the well instead of shut it in, think about the scenario when a hurricane stops by for a visit.

I found this illuminating. He called the top kill fail several days before it was announced.

I found it ridiculous. The guy clearly has no clue what he's talking about. I stopped reading when he started talking about gauges. He shows a picture of a gauge and makes the assumption that it is displaying pressure inside the stack. In fact, that gauge is displaying hydraulic pressure inside an accumulator. The pressure inside the stack is not displayed on any gauge and is not monitored by ROV cameras. It is sent to the surface via transducer and monitored there.

This is just more FUD (fear, uncertainty & doubt) being spread around by people who don't know squat about the oil industry.

MountainTiger: thanks for all the informative posts. I do enjoy reading them from someone who knows what he's talking about.

Thanks, there are people here who have a whole lot more knowledge about this stuff than I do. What I do have right now is a little time and a disgust for misinformation, of which there is a lot regarding this disaster. I'm just trying to correct some of the errors, hopefully without introducing too many of my own.

Interesting article with many questions I would like to see the answers to. This reminds me of LSU football, so many questions you can never fully answer because we really dont know whats going on behind the scene.
I think if we knew everything the BP knows now we may feel differently and understand the situation and why they do things the way they do. I am not ready to assume BP is evil or stupid now just because I dont have all the info.

Integrity test has re-started.

Kill Line valve is closed. Choke is still flowing and still producing to the HP1. Look for the ultimate shut-in to take all day, assuming things go well.

strait out off my a%% thinking. that it is the smallest pipe still flowing, and whould put more back pressure on the well.

Choke is NOT producing to the Helix Producer. There is no collection or production at all right now. In order to conduct this test, there can be no flow to anything outside of the well. They want to see a certain pressure inside the stack and if they were trying to produce at the same time, it would be taking some of that pressure away.

So now that the kill line is closed, what they will be doing is gradually closing the choke valves to choke back the flow. This will cause the pressure within the stack to rise (hopefully). As long as the pressure is rising and holding they will continue to gradually shut it in until either they see that it is not holding pressure or it is completely shut in. If they get it shut in, they will keep it that way as long as it is able to hold pressure. If at any time they see a pressure drop, they will open up the rams, abandon the test and resume collection.
