Past La. quarterbacks

Bert Jones comes to mind as being one of the greatest to play for LSU. Bit the list of others who made it big in the pros is impressive. Terry Bradshaw, Peyton Manning, Bobby Hebert just to name a few. LSU has missed out so many times on quarterbacks who went on to be great in the NFL. And I just can't remember the name of the one from Grambling who won a Superbowl. Is there a reason so many great quarterbacks missed going to LSU? Grades, lack of scholarship offer?

Doug Williams. Don't forget integration played a role too.

Joe Ferguson, Bubby Brister, Stan Humphries and Kordell Stewart would have made Hallman look like a much better coach.

There really aren't that many QBs produced in La. Particularly in the last 10 yrs. We produce mostly skill position guys and linemen. QB coaching at the HS level also isn't that good in La as it is in other states.

I agree that it is harder to find high quality quarterback prospects in the State but why? At one time there were 4,5,6 starting quarterbacks in the NFL from La. North La. was a hotbed. I watched Alan Risher from Salmen high school in Slidell. Is it the coaches in this state or what?

Is it just me, or does anybody else have a hard time considering Peyton Manning a Louisiana quarterback?

The Mannings to me are Mississippi transplants. Archie will always be loved by most Saints fans but he was Ole Miss and raised his sons to hate LSU.

Newman is an LHSAA school. So yes I consider him a Louisiana product.

I can think of Terry, Doug, those Manning kids. Who else? Bubby Brister was Elway's b/u. Does he count?

Another La QB was James Harris out of Monroe- I remember when he played for the Rams. He was the 1st or 2nd black QB to ever play in the pros...

re: Past La. quarterbacks

Nebraska used to come to La. every year to get an option type Qb. But the reason that I started this thread was I was wondering what is different. Why were so many good quarterbacks developed back then compared to now. Even though Brett Farve is not from La. he was an unknown and played for Southern Miss, that is how Curly ended up in Baton Rouge. A great QB can do that for a team. Where did Drew Brees play and how high of a recruit was he. And I know he is not from Louisiana. I am trying to make a point that some guys become great while they are in college.

Drew grew up in Dallas I believe. Was shunned by the big Texas teams, so somehow ended up at Purdue. I think a hs coach or relative knew somebody up in Indiana. Read it on the Saints board not too long ago.
