Once you've had a staph infection are you more susceptible to it?

I am asking because a friend has staph and I had it really bad a few years ago from living in a nasty dorm and wondering if I am more susceptible to it.

I wouldn't think so. You may actually have some antibodies built up in your body that may be able to mount an attack much quicker than during the initial infection. Our bodies a very skilled with respect to dealing with foreign germs and staph is a very common germ. We encounter staph daily.

The staph infections that pose the greatest threat are those often referred to as MRSA with is Methcillin Resistant Staph Aureus. This Staph strain is resistant to the primary antibiotic used to kill these powerful Staph infections, Methcillin.

I think you will be ok, just don't kiss your freind until after his infection has cleared up.

Once you have staph it never leaves your body it just becomes inactive. I believe you more susceptible to it bc I had a friend who had it the summer before freshman year and then had it 5 times throughout high school.

Everyone has the staph virus in their system at all times, it just has to be triggered. It's closely related to strep.

So when you get it once, it's not that you are more susceptible to getting it again, it's just STILL already in your system.

Yeah and once you have MRSA one time, if you ever get staph again it will be assumed it is MRSA and the doctor will treat you accordingly.

Actually staph is a bacteria that lives on your skin at all times, part of your normal flora. Most concentrated area of the bacteria is in your nose. All that is needed is a small break in your skin to become infected. We don't know why, but once you get an infection, you are more prone to getting another one. The main thing to combat the infection is handwashing and antibiotics.

Your friend is a dirty, staph-infested, nose-picking hippy.

Yes.

I had to be hospitalized once for it. It lives in your nose. Every time I have a cut I have to be very careful to clean it. After I was hospitalized, I've had it about 5 times for things as small as insect bites.

lots of on target answers here. once you are colonized by the mrsa strain of staph it is very hard to completely eradicate (sometimes it can be done with funky antibiotic combinations - like rifampin which is known for treating TB).

if you are colonized by mrsa it is likely to cause another skin infection. we sometimes recommend an antibiotic ointment for in the nose and soaking in a tub a couple times a wk with 1/4 cup chlorox added to the h2o.

Cosmo and Scooby are correct.

Staph is a bacterium not a virus. Viruses go "inactive", bacterium do not. Once you get a bacterial infection it is almost impossible to completely rid yourself of that particuliar bacteria, with some exceptions - septicemia etc. Obviously, you can decrease their numbers to where they do not affect you.

That's what I had to use every time I got staph as well as antibiotics. Also had to cut open the infection and drain it multiple times.

And quit tossing salad, it's not called brown nosing because you kiss ass, it's because of the staph infection you get afterwards.
