Please explain LA TOPS to me,,

And isn't it a lot like Nebraska's old County Scholarship program that was ended and pretty much ended NEB as a relevant football power?

get good grades in high school and the state pays for your tuition if you stay in-state

I was playing ball tonight with someone that CLAIMED LSU inside info and said A LOT of athletes get this aid,, but I saw a link that didn't appear to put any limit on how many or who can qualify
he implied it was a way of shuffling athlete to LSU to have then play as walk -ons
hence the Neb reference

I think TOPS would help more in baseball with the limited scholarships than in football, but i'm not certain

The way I understand it is that if you meet certain requirements (ie grades and test scores), you get scholarship money to go to LSU. It used to allow LSU an advantage over other schools in recruiting, esp. baseball, b/c it allowed coaches more money to give out to out of state recruits if some in state recruits received TOPS. Obviously, TOPS is available b/c of the lottery.

There's limited baseball scholarships. I'm not sure about the number of TOPS scholarships, but i think if you meet the requirements then you get it. Not limited by parish

I'm not sure about limits specifically but I don't think they're handed out freely like that guy seemed to be implying. You have to meet certain requirements to be on TOPS so its not really a way to shuffle athletes to LSU as walk ons.

TOPS pays for in state tuition if you meet certain "state guidelines" as far as education goes. Luckily, if you get into LSU, unless you had to suck someone to get in, your grades pretty much qualify you for your tuition to get paid.
It helps in sports because it does allow in state students to not have to take a full scholarship. Less money to in state = more money to out of state. Pretty much was said but hope this clarified.

its a type of academic scholarship. i remember when the journalists were claiming it was a way of cheating for the baseball team.
however, i dont understand how it would be different than a baseball player at any other university on an academic scholarship? i dont understand the ins and outs of the baseball scholly rules. it seems that a player getting tops at LSU, would be the same thing as a player at rice getting a regular academic scholly.
oh, and i dont know if i misread a previous post (forgive me if i did), but you dont have to go to LSU to get tops. its at any public university. it doesnt cover 100% obviously, but it does help quite a bit. especially for someone who isnt being covered by their parents.

Except now Skelator Lombardi wants to change it to a needs based program. That MF needs to be sent packing. Hopefully Patrick Taylor's widow will threaten to cut off the cash if they screw with this program her late husband set up and funded.
Lombardi's career shows that he stays in one place about as long as Larry Brown, so I keep hoping he will GTFO.

I actually went to school on TOPS. It is a three tiered shlollie system for in state students to attend any public school in state. The basic requirements of a 2.5 and a 20 on the ACT will get your tuition paid. A 3.0 and ~25 will get you tuition and ~$500 a semester and so on.
This is an academic scholarship, therefor it does not count toward any NCAA scholarship counts. I attended McNeese as a "prefered walk on" with a full ride from TOPS. The sport it helps the most is baseball, but football wil often use it for in state kickers to save a scholly. The thing to remember is that it does not pay everything the way an athletic scholly does so the kid still has to pay something.

Tops is available to anyone in La. who stays in state and meets certain academic criteria; not just athletes. It does provide an advantage for a state school in any sport that does not have full rides. The max TOPS benefit is around $4000 or so (may be a little more). This doesn't help much at a private university but is better than nothing.

There are a lot of misconceptions with TOPS. It's a "tuition assistance" payment, and does not cover a mulititude of fees, food, boarding, books, etc.
I've got a kid that will be going to LSU next year. With all associated costs, it'll be about $14k. He's earned the highest level of TOPS, which is an extra $800. TOPS is only kicking in around $3800.
I can see TOPS being beneficial in baseball where athletes can only get one-third scholarship (or in this case about $4700).
I can't figure out how kids manage to play baseball at the likes of Tulane, Rice, and Vandy where costs are about $50K. Take out the one-third scholarship payment and they've got to find a way to about $33K per year. I know some rules are twisted relative to academic and "leadership" scholarships, but it's got to be tough work for those coaches.
