Just some random thoughts on mergers and acquisitions.

I propose that there be four conferences of 16 teams each, arranged along geographic lines (east, southeast, midwest, and pacific) and further that each conference be divided into four 4 team divisions. For example, add texas and TAMU to the west and Fla state and Miami to the east. The southeastern conference would be divided into division one - texas, tamu, ark, and LSU, division two - miss st, Ole miss, ala, and aub, division three - miami, fla, fla state, and ga, and division four - tenn, vanderbilt,SC, and kentucky.

Each team will play the other three in their division every year and six of the remaining twelve leaving three non conference games per year. This assures that each team plays everbody in their conference home and home every four years.

division winners will be determined on overall conference records with head to head and division record as the first and second tie breakers.

On the first Saturday in December the 16 division winners will meet at neutral sites for a play off game with a predetermined opponent from the same conference - i.e. division one winner plays division two winner, division three winner plays division four winner. Let's call this meeting of 16 division winnners sweet 16 saturday.

The elite 8 winners will meet in the four major bowls(Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose) on January 1. The eight teams will be seeded 1 through 8 and 1 will play 8, 2 will play 7 etc with the locations rotating through the four bowls. The four winners assume the seed of the highest seed so if 8 beats 1, they become the new number 1 seed.

On January 7 the new 1 meets the new 4 at the site of the game that hosted 1 vs. 8 and the new number 2 meets the new number 3 at the site of the game between 2 and 7. Two teams will be playing at the same site on consecutive saturdays and there is a good chance that a lot of fans will stay over for the week(big money for the local economy). The two winners will meet for the national championship game on january 14 at the site of the game between 3 and 6.

This will generate a lot of additional tv money and make the regular season important while determining a true champion through a playoff.
it extends the seson by one week for four teams. It eliminates teams that are not in the four conferences from playing for the nat championship (coughnotredamecough). Realistically, if you aren't good enough to be in the top 64, you are never going to play for the national championship anyway.
