Been in San Destin since Wednesday. Other than a pretty serious bunch of algae bloom the region is looking really good. No oil No tar. Went snorkleing at the east jettys and the water was absolutely beautiful and clear. Plenty of fish and other wildlife to view. Hope this lasts but if you are coming enjoy it while you can.

I'm going to Destin for a conference on the 27th. Most of my co-workers have cancelled due to "oil". I can't even convince these educated people that Destin is not affected by the spill. Its amazing how the the power of hype can mesmerize people into becoming ignorant lemmings!

You would think that with all the cancellations and stuff you would be able to get a room cheap but so far my wife hasn't found it.

Destin is completely fine right now. I've been going to the beach for a month, no tar and no smell. I don't know what will happen if the weather changes, but it should be a good bit before it arrives. Also, don't expect to find a cheap room: it seems that everyone moved their vacations up, because it has been pretty packed here.

they are not necessarily going to advertise a discounted rate. What I am saying is that you can check their calendar and, if they are not booked for the week that you're interested in, you call the owner (or e-mail them) and make an offer. If they don't accept your low ball offer, you say o.k. and move on to the next place. More than likely, though, they will accept it because most owners down they'd rather get your discounted rate than nothing at all.

i found 2 more places this morning offering discounts.

one was discounted and waiving all cleaning fees

the other was listed as a "deep" discount because of hte oil

Just because it's clear right now, doesn't mean it will be in a month. As the oil makes it's way down the coast, why is it ridiculous to think it will eventually hit Destin?

It will hit Destin within a week or so looking at the projections.

the projections also had it hitting pensacola with 72 hours and this was nearly 2 weeks ago. As far as I know, it really hasn't hit pensacola (very hard at least) - the winds and currents could shift any day and this stuff could stay away from destin for awhile.

The projections are about as accurate as Hurricanne forcasts..........after you get about 48 hrs. out, they are for planning purposes only.

Exactly. So if I have a vacation planned in a month for Destin and I don't know, or won't know, for several weeks if the water and the beaches are going to be covered in oil, then I'm bailing.

Just got back from MiraMar Beach and had a great time. Algae was horrible but it is time of the year so it is expected. I wouldnt make any plans to cancel any trip there anytime soon.

it's kind of ridiculous to try to make a reservation anywhere. who knows where the oil will be at a given time?

if you can get a garunteed cancellation refund it would be an incentive to book something.

just booked july3rd-10th

for nearly 60% off.

gonna take our chances. there is a pool on site if not and hopefully they can prevent the oil from getting into the bay and crab island
