Texas A&M's indecision could open door for Baylor, Kansas, Utah

04:44 PM CDT on Friday, June 11, 2010
From Staff and Wire Reports
Texas A&M's wavering on joining the Pac-10 with Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State could open the door for other schools such as Baylor, Utah and Kansas.

A highly placed official from a Big 12 school told the Austin American-Statesman that "A&M is sitting on the fence."

Baylor, which seemed to be looking on the outside after Colorado accepted the Pac-10's invitation to join this week, might be back in. It all depends on A&M, the official told the Statesman.

''If A&M doesn't go, Baylor's got a window to go," the official said. "(Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech) -- none of them have anything against Baylor. We're not opposed to Baylor, and we've said positive things about them."

But, the official continued, "The schools on the West Coast just don't see the benefit of Baylor. The Pac-10 is talking more about Kansas and Utah because they bring different (television) markets. Baylor's been lobbying everybody around Texas. They need to be lobbying California."

TAMU renewed their schedule with us a short time ago and now have Tubbs as coach. If they are coming they better make it fast or they could get left out in the cold.

ya, Baylor is not getting in best I can tell

Utah is my best guess - although if I were them I'd seriously consider Houston as a replacement for A&M instead - big public school in Houston... that's a more natural A&M replacement

I think this is more of a bluff to scare A&M to join with them over there in the pac 10. They are doing all they can to keep the sec out of texas

And Houston plays the kind of offense and defense that you see out of the current Pac 10 schools.

Pac 10 will not take Houston, but it would be a good bet to do so...Houston is also Mexicana much like Los Angeles is. The fit would be a boon to Houston, but down the road, it could be a boon for the Pac 10 to be smack dab in the middle of the Houston TV market.

Ain't gonna happen, though. LSU and A&M are going to own Houston soon as A&M moves to the SEC.

Don't think Houston's 30,000 seat stadium will impress many folks.

Especially with those overflow crowds of 15,000...the P10 would be better pulling TCU out of the MTN that UH.

This may be a true statement if Sherman doesn't get anymore results on the field and Tubby has a big year at Tech.

Not a win by anyone. Houston needs to upgrade badly, but it doesn't have the $$$. It's a very large school, but mostly a commuter enrollment. I hope they get some money flowing in because it would be great if they could be a player in a larger conference.

A&M needs to be in the SEC.

BTW... What's Texas got in common with the Pacific Athletic Conference? How far away from the Pacific is the PAC going to get?

Correct. That's like saying UAB owns the Birmingham market.

Houston is a perfect fit right where they are.
