Why couldn't BP build a massive dome that would cover the entire BOP? I'm talking something along the lines of 10 stories tall and 100ft in diameter. Plumb the thing so they could circulate hot water throughout to prevent hydrate build up. Seems like this little top hat doesn't have a chance in hell due to the pressure from the well.

A cofferdam like that was actually Plan A. They tried it and it failed.

That was placed over the broken riser and they didn't plan for the hydrate build up. With lessons learned and increasing the size of the dome seems like they could make that idea work.

Shouldnt take more than, like, two or three hours to build something like that. Can't imagine why they haven't done that. Why don't you call a fab yard and get it built. I'm sure bp would pay you for it. And lawd knows the fab yards are going to need the work.

Actually they were thinking that the smaller dome (i.e., the top hat) would allow them to inject methanol into it and reduce the hydrate buildup. The top hat was originally Plan B but they didn't try it for some reason and went to the top kill option.

It'd also be nice if these were already built too... You know to save the whole oil spill disaster for 60 plus days in our oceans and on our coastlines.

They should have originally took the roof off the super dome and used that to place on top of leak and BP just pay for a new stadium for our city. The stadium may end up being cheaper.

The cofferdam in Plan A didn't have the methanol pumps that the current tophat-riser scheme is using.

The cofferdam in Plan A was also used over the riser, not the BOP, if I remember correctly. That type of partial solution is obviously no longer an option.

One reason hydrates get formed and gunk things up is because the seawater gets in with the oil. That's why the current cap (which doesn't have a tight seal) deliberately leaks some of the oil out, to keep out the seawater.

Since you need a (reasonably) tight seal, having a cavernous metal shell doesn't really do anything for you if you're pumping the oil out as fast as it comes in.

and just how do you plan on getting this 10 story 100ft in diameter dome out there and then placed directly over the well?
