So the gf and I went with some friends of ours for the first time yesterday. I've been hearing about this place for years so I ordered what was supposed to be their signature po-boy, I think it was called "the fergie" or something. Basically roast beef, ham, gravy, and dressed w/mustard and mayo. Anyhow, I have to say I think this place is way overrated. Don't get me wrong, food was not bad, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to go again. I've had much better sandwiches elsewhere.

So did I order the wrong thing? Thoughts

You're right. Not horrible but not great.

A buddy of mine got a Ferdie about a month back and said the sandwich was okay; bread was average / borderline stale.

They do very good red beans and rice and they do a better ham than roast beef if you ask me.

I like the Ralphie, a Ferdie with cheese. The seafood gumbo is very good as is the jambalaya.

Wow, this must be the first thread I ever read on this board that is critical of a New Orleans institution restaurant. I'm so glad those BR gourmets are right on top of things trying to keep those 100 y/o places from falling flat on their faces. I have no idea how Mandina's, Mother's, Commander's Palace or Antoine's have stayed open this long.

Getting cussed out by the help and getting told to "move" is the whole experience.

One taste of the experience is plenty, that's for damn sure.

I ran a hotel right down the street from Mothers. Tried it several times and was never impressed. What is funny is if you see the line waiting outside to get in, more often than not the restaurant is not full. They just manage to have a line formed to give the impression they are full.

Been to Mother's a couple of times after hearing about how great it was. I was not impressed at all. I have had much better Po Boys in many other places. Heck, I make them better myself.

I'm a big fan of the red jambalaya. Actually had the Ferdie a month or so ago and it was ok, good taste, but I really don't like a soaking wet poboy. We go for the atmosphere.

The Ferdie. According to my Aunt, my grandpaw said he invented the sandwich. His name was Ferdinand. I sure he was bs.

I was in NOLA yesterday. Asked for advice on where to go and everyone said to stay away from Mother's.

You can't put Mothers in line with Antoines or Commanders. And Mothers is more of a tourist trap than anything else. Ok but much better places in town. I will take Liuzzas over Mandinas as well.
