Finally, people are realizing that we have way too many 4-yr institutions in the state.

That scenario would involve shuttering Nicholls State University, McNeese State University, Southern University at New Orleans, LSU at Alexandria, LSU at Shreveport, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Grambling State University and Northwestern State University.
Let's go ahead and scratch one of these off the list. I'm not in the mood to read about race riots in Lincoln Parish.

Realizing it won't make any difference politically. I don't believe they'll close any of the schools on the list.

Reading the links, it says LA is facing a 30% cuts. LA's economy hasn't suffered nearly as much as a lot of other states during this recession so how did they come up so short?

The article says that the state is going to run dry on federal stimulus money. Looks like that is one of the problems.

SUNO will probably merge with UNO, LSU-S and SU-S may combine instead of being completely eliminated, and SU may be moved into the UL system.

Doing those three things would "get rid" of two schools and an entire university system from the current crowded landscape in the state (and, importantly for costs, the overhead associated with them) without necessarily displacing any actual students.
