I'm sure it's been talked about before, but what's the best review book(s) to buy? Kaplan? Princeton Review? The Official Guide for GMAT Review?

I am also interested in knowing. I've been using the Kaplan. Additionally, I bought the math book and the "hard questions" book.

I used Kaplan and I dominated the test.

Studying helps, but only to a certain level. If you want to get above 650, you are going to have to really bust arse and be smart to boot. No amount of studying will get you to 700+.

Since it reacts to the questions you have answered correctly, there is a major "plateau" factor. Studying only helps you get to your plateau.

My buddy said his brother went from a 600ish with Kaplan to a 730 with a class. Classes are really expensive, and he only did it because he's trying to go to Ivy MBA.

I'm only buying a book to brush up on some things as I don't need a very high score to get in. But if I'm buying a book, I want one that will help.

I used Kaplan and Princeton Review. My best advice is to do ALL of the practice tests on the CD that comes with the books. Don’t get too discouraged by your score on the practice tests. Add about 75-100 points to your practice test score and that’s around what you'll get on the real GMAT.

From what I remember Kaplan was the best

Got the admission ticket for L1 today. Test is being given in the exact same room as my final tonight. I thought it would've been a bigger room, do they split people up into multiple rooms? This room only has like 30-40 desks.

The best guides are by Manhattan GMAT, but you need to get to a ~680 level to get anything out of them. I used Kaplan to lay the groundwork then MGMAT to pick up the more difficult concepts.

Yep, some of those Kaplan disk practice test dominated me and discouraged the hell out of me.

Then I figured a few things out and it wasn't as bad. Made a 620 last time studying Kaplan for a weekend. Trying to move up to a 660+.

I tried doing it just using a "gmat for dummies book," took a practice test, and got a 560. Needless to say I lost more than a little self confidence right then. Those types of questions don't come to me naturally, I needed something to teach me how to take the test, not how to do the questions. I think that's the case for 99% of the world (obvious exception being Rivers).

Yep, it takes some time understanding the way they ask the questions. Some of the stuff is tricky as hell early on. The bonus is that later once you learn the tricks you can us it to your advantage.

Many years ago I spent Mardi Gras weekend with Kaplan's CD and scored over 700. ULL accepted me - hooray!

Yeah. They split us up into 3 or 4 rooms last year.

Want to drown in hand grenades after the test? I am probably gonna get a hotel room on bourbon.
