what is the best way to find out my score.

Not really interested in giving one of those sites a credit card.

Honestly I doubt it's worth the trouble. Just apply for whatever you are going to apply for. At some point they will run your credit report. If you are turned down they are required to give you your score. If you are accepted they aren't obligated to but generally will anyway if you ask.

I thought they are obligated to give you just your report, not your score.

Incorrect. They are required to give you the decline reasons, not the score. A decline letter will say what you requested and normally up to 3 reasons why you were declined and the bureau they used if you would like to contact them.

Strictly speaking yes, but they generally send the scores since that's pretty much 80% of what they use anyway.

I have developed decline letters for about 120 banks and have yet to see that request, but I am sure they are out there.
