Biggest grade 'curve' in a college class

This happened back in 98. The class was Organic Chemistry II in Williams hall and it was the Friday before a long weekend. This was an 8:30 class plus it was pouring outside. Maybe 30 of us showed up out of a class of about 150.

Professor took our names down and we all got an additional 20 percent added to our final grade. Not 20 points, I mean 20%. So if you ended up with a 70 (a C), he bumped you up to a 90 after the final for an A.

The kids who didn't show up complained to the dean but it didn't matter. All 30 of us got the additional 20%.

that's awesome

same thing would of happened in an accounting class i had. professor counted 30 people and said that if he got 30 names on the list he'd give us 10pts to our final grade.

stupid mfers in the class added people to the list anyway

In one of my EE classes, the average was like a 30% on one test. I got somewhere in the 30's and it was a C.

That's extremely shitty.

That that the professor wasn't within his rights, but the fact that he did it. Especially for an early morning class with really bad weather on presumably a random day. shite like this is a lot of whats wrong with GPA centric comparisons.

That said, Organic Chem is going to win this topic one way or another.

The final curve (given to everyone) for my first orgo class had B's going down to 66.

Took a Wildlife Class back in 2001 and the professor would give pop quiz throughout the year. It was always on the notes from the previous class. Typically you would get 8-10% points per quiz and there were 4 quizzes. I just remember on my PAWS account getting like 130% in the class.

Physics 2001 in 1988.

My score of 46 on the first test was curved up to a high B.

Biggest reverse curve: back in the 80s, had Chem 1202 with Watkins. First day of class he told us the grading scale was that 10% are A, 20% B, 40% C, 20% D and 10% F. First test average was 26, second test average was 35. After the drop date someone asked him to repeat the grading scale so we would know where the cuttoffs for each grade was. His response was 90-100 is A, 80-89 is B, etc. 100 people walked out.

frick...guess I stand corrected then

The lowest curve I have seen in a non-low end weedout class was Advanced Orgo (senior level). A C was 50% and an a 80% (and that was the grading scale from the syllabus, not curved for the class)

An additional 20% of 70 is 14, so you would have ended up with an 84 in this case.

Adding 20 points to a grade of 70 would make it a 90.

Right?

Sooo......where did the curve come in? Even if he stuck about to the percentage based grading, that many people leaving (which would tend to be the weaker students) would make it a lot harder to get a higher grade.

He means 20% was added to the final grade.

Count up the percent grade of the regular class, and then add 20%

Right?

i think the OP ment 20 percentage points not actually 20% of your grade added on...

20 points added to a 100 total point class would be the scenerio you wrote but most classes are out of 450pts-1000pts

Additional 20 to the final grade. Not 20% of the grade. A 70 became a 90.

re: Biggest grade 'curve' in a college class

he means 20% of 100%... not of your current grade

btw worst curve ever for people not failing is the take teh square root of your grade and multiply by 10... so a 49 becomes a 70... a 64 a 80 and a 81 a 90

that's just saying you don't want to flunk anyone... don't bother really learning the material

re: Biggest grade 'curve' in a college class

If you scored 40 on both tests, you would have been above average on both tests. It would also mean that you would be in the upper half of the class, which means your expectation would be that you are at least a C, possibly higher. When he changed the scale to the 10 point scale, that 40 average became an F, with little chance of passing.

I stayed in the class, scored higher than the class average on all tests, and failed the course.

On a test in CM 3121 I got the highest grade at a 65 and he bumped it up to a 105 after the curve.
