re: My 14 Year Old Dog has heartworm :(

I worked at a vet clinic for 6 years...I'm just offering my opinion based on how my vet treated dogs w/ heartworms.

What did you have your dog on? If it's a Novartis product (Interceptor, Sentinel), Novartis pays for the treatment if you can prove you gave the dog it's pills monthly. You can prove it w/ a receipt.

I had him on Sentinel, but since I slacked off for a couple of months, I may not be covered. I'm hoping that the vet can someway prove that he was infected last fall, which might cover me since I bought a 6 month supply in the spring (which I have proof).

Think about it... dogs lived for thousands of years before some vets began making us buy medication in the past 50 years.

Dogs have not been exposed to heartworms for thousands of years.

But with that logic, humans have lived for thousands of years before some docs bagan making folks buy their medication. Time to boycott modern medicine. You first.

Yeah, like I already said, I screwed up. I'm not asking for your opinion on why it happened or how it happened, I'd just like to know what you would do if you were in the situation.

my dog passed away in december from a tumor on his heart that was pushing his throat upwards. He was ten and honestly i was taking him to radiation the morning he died. But now i sit and question myself a few times of "why didn't i bring him to the vet sooner" and "i should have took him in the morning and just have been late for work". Do what you can, but be reasonable and stay within your budget. When i look at my situation and how it is now, i would have spent the money and would like to have him still here.

eta...one thing i did do was ask the vet her opinion because i was torn on how it would affect his life after treatment and she said to bring him to radiation. Listen to your vet's advice on this one.

No prob.

Your vet may be able to work w/ you about proving that you had your dog on sentinel. My vet liked doing that b/c she would charge the maximum for everything and get paid back by Novartis

My dog even got them. And I had him on Sentinel which I was getting for free from Novartis...so she made some receipts up for the proof

We just adopted a little dog that is HW+. I did a lot of research before deciding to get her and came across an alternative herbal product to treat HW.

Hear me out. I am the most critical person in the world when it comes to herbal remedies. I have always considered it quackery. But in trying to spare her the horrors of traditional treatment, I did a lot of research and found only positive results with this product. However, after giving it to her for a while, she started passing blood so we took her off of it. Now that we're going to a vet about it and signed up for the conventional treatment, it's starting to look like it was hookworms that were causing the bleeding, not the product (remember, we got this dog from a shelter and knew nothing about her).

With all of that said, we go back to the vet for staging this Thursday and if it is beyond stage 1, I would be willing to give you the rest of the product if you wanted to try it. If it is stage 1, I may try to convince the vet to let me try it again after we have the stomach worming out of the way. If not, you are welcomed to it.

It's "claim to fame" is that it is supposed to be a more gradual kill and easier on the dog. Older dogs and pregnant dogs can take it. Do a search for Amber Technology or Wolf Creek Ranch, one of their main e-sellers.

I'm not trying to push this on you. If I indeed don't have any further use for it, I just thought you may want a cost free try at something else if your decision was to not go through with the conventional treatment.

Don't worry about it. My friends dog had it for 17 years before it died. Heart worms is a myth created by vets. Animals lived before there vets. Just continue giving heart guard

How do you give this to your dog? Is it a pill?

re: My 14 Year Old Dog has heartworm :(

It's a liquid you syringe into their mouth after a meal. It wreaks of garlic and they do not like it. For the 10 lb dog I have, she only needed 1.6 mil/twice a day. Check out the website. Like I said, I didn't use it long enough to speak for myself, but I read a lot of forums and testimonials that mentioned it. I figured it was worth a shot.

An option for Stage 1 HW is to continue HW preventative. The larvae in the blood will be killed fairly quickly and the adults will be sterilized, but won't die for about 2 years. If your dog is determined to be able to withstand the damage caused during those 2 years, that is an option for treatment. If it is determined that this is the catagory my dog falls under, I may wait a little while and try the product again to see for sure if it was the hookworms causing the bleeding.

If my dog is Stage 2 or greater, I think I will just go through with the conventional treatment. In that event, I would give the product I have to someone else wanting to give it a shot.

Here's some good info on the subject in general. The vet gave us this exact info when we went in Friday.

We had the receipts, but my wife said she could not be positively certain she'd given each dose timely. I paid for the treatment.

I'd definitely be interested if you don't have use for it.

I wouldn't go through it. 14 is a long time for a dog to live and putting him through that may do him in. I just had to put my 15 year old golden retriever down a couple of weeks ago and it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but I was happy that I had him as long as I did.

re: My 14 Year Old Dog has heartworm :(

I took my dog back to the vet yesterday to have a larger blood sample drawn to be sent in to the lab. The vet called me yesterday to tell me that his blood test came back negative...WTF. Now they want me to bring him back in tomorrow to get another sample since there is a discrepancy between the vet's conclusion and the lab's.

If this second one comes up negative, I'm asking for some free shite.
