Cabbage Ball

Had to explain what cabbage ball was to a friend who has lived here for eight years but didn't grow up here.

He was so confused. I told him I'll buy him a ball and show it to him. I haven't started to look yet, but does anyone know where I can definitely find one?

re: Cabbage Ball

A lot of leagues, especially up north, play something called 16 inch softball. I believe it's the same exact thing. Google that and you'll probably get some websites that sell them.

I remember when we were kids everyone had some laying around. I don't want to order online, I just want to go to Academy or something.

re: Cabbage Ball

When I was a kid I thought my coonass cousins had flipped their lid when I heard them talking about playing cabbage ball. Then they produced this bigass soft softball as evidence that they were not lying dumbasses. It blew my mind.

And that you can't hit too hard.

re: Cabbage Ball

The first time I found out no one else played cabbage ball, I was dumbfounded.

Now I get it, New Orleans schools didn't have big enough yards and we could play on the concrete kick-ball field.

Fun game, and the only kids who got hurt were the girls playing "short-short" when they would get hit in face.

Did you play in the CYO leagues? Very popular game in New Orleans.

Wow, that brings back memories. In my little kid brain I can remember thinking La Place was some place akin to Mars with crazy games like cabbage ball and whacked-out positions like short-short.

I never played for a CYO. I went to St. Pius, and we played other schools. St. Dominic was our biggest "rival"

It isn't even Louisiana, I think it's basically just the New Orleans Metro area... I know BR people who haven't heard of it.

Two time City (N.O.) Champs!!!

One year as a centerfield, one year as a pitcher.

Holy Rosary on Esplanade was our biggest rival. I loved playing on their field with the church as the right field wall. We had a left actually ring the bell and put the ball in the bell tower. That's an almost impossible shot for a righty.

It's nationwide, but only popular in certain areas. Mostly up north. I umpire ASA softball and when we take the test, we have to know the rules for 16 inch, which is cabbage ball, even though nobody here plays it.
