I think this is a pretty interesting situation. All season, it was assumed by many of us that Williams would get another shot at a head coaching job next year and would only be around in New Orleans for the 2009 season. But there obviously aren't any NFL head coaching jobs available this late in the game. Do you think it's safe to assume he'll be back next year? Or do you think he'll take a shot at rebuilding another team's defense as DC? I realize this is all speculation since (as far as I know) there hasn't been any media discussion of this yet.

I would definitely bet on him being back next year, how many head coaching jobs are available right now? How many has he been mentioned for? From his quotes this week, he likes Payton, Brees, and this team and wants to be here awhile.

I actually think the raiders are a possiblity still. Might be why Al has been stringing Cable along. I think there might be some kind of rule against teams talking to other team's coaches while they are still playing.

Plus he fits the Al Davis philosophy..."the other teams quarterback must go down, and he must go down hard"

Gregg Williams sounds as if he has no interest in being a head coach anywhere.

could it come down to Benson bumping his pay to make staying even more attractive?

If he does, I think he'll try to find a good situation to go into where he isn't destined to fail, like Oakland.

You think it's that certain? I don't know how long his deal is for, but I have to think he may feel a raise is warranted given the way he improved the defense.

Wasn't that the point of his original salary?

For the record, I think he's going to be here. He's got a pretty good gig in New Orleans. We have a great offense, and he seemingly has total control of the defense. It would be a tough job to give up. To be honest, I only started thinking about this because of the article on Nola.com today about how he and his son were living in an apartment around the Marigny. It did not seem like a permanent residence.

"Raiders", "Benson bumping...pay"

Man, this thread is hysterical.

He improved the defense, but a raise after 1 season for a defense that is still mediocre? No. If it improves some more next year, yeah, give him a raise.

He got paid what he got paid originally TO MAKE THE DEFENSE BETTER. But the defense wasn't all that to warrant any substantial pay increase from what he got paid this ending season IMHO.

There really aren't any jobs open anywhere now in the NFL or college.
