When Selling Your Car, Who Pays The Title Transfer Fees, Etc.?

Anybody know the answer to this?

Is it usually discussed once a price is agreed upon, or does the buyer always take care of it?

Any help is appreciated!

Well, you write up a the "Bill of Sale" and sign it and he signs it and you give him the title and he takes it to the DMV with the Bill of Sale and then registers it/transfers it to his name...

edit: if he's cool or it's a friend, you can write a cheaper price in the title field where it says "price" or whatever, so when they pay the tax at the DMV it will be way less....

When I bought my Audi, I bought it for WAAAYYYY more than $4,300.

Dude, go to a notary who handles auto transfers and they will handle everything for you, including the info that goes to the DMV.

One stop

Wish it would be that easy - that way, it can just go down as a donation.

That's what the bill of sale is for... after you sell it, it's dated and has signatures, I'm pretty sure you're not liable beyond that for the title... I'd maybe talk to a notary.

Oh, and don't do business with shady people

I will admit the last car I bought was in California... and it really was that easy... I wrote two checks to the guy, one for $4,300 and one for the "remainder" and just wrote in $4,300 on the title... this was in 04

Happens a lot. People sell four wheelers, dirt bikes, etc. for like $3000 and tell the notary it was a $300 sale, and you only pay taxes on the $300.

Texas has switched to paying taxes on the value of the vehicle in certain circumstances. Greedy bastards

Now that would suck. Yep, greedy bastards, why can't they just let people give themselves a tax break

Six days ago, I had a car donated to me.

I did not pay taxes on the vehicle's value, I assure you.

Maybe it's different when it's a donation, I don't know.
