Saffron vs Zaffron
Posted by Kajungee on 1/29/10 at 2:06 pm00
So I have been thinking of taking out second mortgage on the house to by a little Saffron to for a few recipes out that I have wanted to try out.
But every time I find it in store I wonder, at this price how long has this stuff been sitting on the shelf here. And I decide not to buy it.
A while back I notice at a Mexican store a spice called Zaffron, which looked just like Saffron to me. Bright red threads
Well the other day a found myself, on a very rare occasion at the local wal-mart.
I notice they carry the same Zaffron in the Mexican spice section. 99 cent for a bid ole bag. One aisle over Saffron $ 14.95 for a little envelope.
Anyone know anything about this Mexican Zaffron?
Is this the real thing? Or just a homegrown ragweed knock-off the red haired goodness
definition of zaffron
in all seriousness, the price difference has to do with where the spice is grown. mexican saffron is a lower quality and may be some tumeric hybrid, but the taste still has saffron qualities. expensive saffron is typically found in western/central asia and areas out on that side of the world...

Look for a middle eastern store (any in BR? I'm not sure).
I buy it at Mona's Market in N.O. I can't recall where it's from, but it comes in a little plastic box about 1" square. Comes with enough threads to last me through 5-6 dishes. I use it primarily when making risotto, and will toss it in a few other things, if I think about it.
It's only about $6-7 and I don't know that it would necessarily be considered some sort of prized quality stuff, but it tastes perfectly fine to me, and seems to serve its purpose.
It's definitely labled Saffron (I want to say it's from Turkey, but I'm not positive).

Could be safflower, I'm not sure though.

An inexpensive imitation of saffron is sometimes called, Zaffron, which utilizes the safflower and is flavorless.

I read somewhere that per oz, saffron is the most expensive commodity on earth. It seems like that has to be wrong though. Something like weapons grade plutonium has to be more expensive.

Don't you think it's weird how the words "priceless" and "worthless" have exact opposite meanings?
