It applies to Football, Baseball and Basketball. Aside from baseball, our AD was content to be average.

Kentucky is on top of The Associated Press' college basketball poll, and the Wildcats are a unanimous No. 1.

The only unbeaten team in Division I, Kentucky (19-0) received all the first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel Monday, its first time at No. 1 since the final poll of 2002-03.

The Wildcats, No. 2 Kansas, Villanova, Syracuse and Michigan State all moved up one place from last week as Texas, which was No. 1 for two weeks, dropped to sixth after losing to Kansas State and Connecticut.

Georgetown, Duke, West Virginia and Purdue rounded out the top 10.

North Carolina (12-7), the defending national champion and loser of three straight, did not receive a vote and dropped out of the poll for the first time since January 2006.

Let's see UNC = defending National Champion

Oh yea, Roy's not a great coach at all.

AND UK - Calipari is GREAT, I wonder how Memphis and UMass fans feel about that!

This stupid thinking is why some LSU fans suck!

What? It means you have a great chance of winning and then your school goes on probation. Like Umass and Memphis. Idiot.

Enjoy that #1 ranking Kentucky fans! Hope the probation is worth it!

I can't believe someone is advocating hiring Calipari.

My thoughts exactly. Doesn't probation usually follow after landing the highest ranked one and done recruit?

And if Manieri misses the CWS a couple of seasons in a row? Will he be mediocre then?

Why am I even responding to this? This is clearly not a serious thread.

You pay for what you get.
AL paid Saban the $$ and got a dominating program in NO Time.
KY paid the $$ and they are back on Top.

Paul M was a great coach. Skip once told me that he reminded him of Saban.

Miles is Miles. Not a heavy hitter when we hired him.

Trent is starting over and was hopefully a good long term hire. However, his 1st 2 years of recruiting sure did not help this year.

Calipari has left a trail of carnage every place he's been. He's beyond sleazy and sooner or later it will catch up to him.

Neither was Saban.

He is saying that we should have fired Les after 2006 and hired Saban.

Apparently not - he took over the manure that Smoke left and got a NC. Would think that is a much greater accomplishment than taking over a TOp 5 program and allowing it to slide out of the Top 25 in Yr 4 and back in at #17 in Year 5.

I sure that you can see that my question is that if Manieri doesn't make the CWS for 2 straight years (a feat comparable to 2 "mediocre" years of LSU football), will he then be considered mediocre?

Would you consider Billy Donovan to be a "great" coach?

Just hauled in a class that's ranked anywhere from 10-20. Not to mention the transfer of Malcolm White who will be ready to contribute significantly from day one. Basketball recruiting is different from other sports. Many of these kids have been recruited by schools for 3-4 years.

That's funny because I remember a lot of people being quite critical of the Paul Mainieri hire because he wasn't "great." On the flip side, most people were (and still are) very pleased with the Trent Johnson hire.

I'm beginning to think this is just another Miles bashing thread. These threads are like most summer movie blockbusters. Everyone flocks to see them for all the fireworks but in the end, there's just not a lot of thought or substance put into them.

This is what happens when you hire a great instead of an average coach after you fired the last great coach you hire without giving him a chance after he was hired to replace the last great coach you had that won you a national championship and then was run out of town.

Well, of course it's a bash Miles thread! But what makes this one so unintentionally brilliant is that he found perhaps the worst possible example of a good coaching hire to use.

I mean, the essential argument is that it is worth paying big money to get a big name coach to win a title, even though that coach will likely land you on probation. It's an absurd proposition.
