I'm going to say based on this, they are the same. The alcohol content in each should have the same effect on your liver. IOW- one shot of whiskey should have the same effect as one beer, one glass of wine, etc. I think most people with liver damage probably drink hard alcohol simply because you get more alcohol by ingesting the same amount of liquid.

Intuitively I would say they have the same effect. A BAC of .2 will have the same effect on your liver no matter where it came from, all other things being equal. The only possible difference I could see is that hard alcohol will elevate your BAC more rapidly because you can ingest more in a given period of time. This will be more of a shock to your liver than the relatively slow rate of increase resulting from beer.
