Perfect fit for Saints.

85-105 all purpose yards per game (out of 500 total yards per team per game)

+

Homerun threat

+

Decoy

+

SP has the right players around him and intelligence to use him properly.

I'd agree with that.

For all the things he doesn't do all that well, Reggie is still a dangerous player with the ball in his hands and Sean Payton knows how to get him where he needs to be to make plays.

Reggie reconfirmed that he is a threat every time he is in the game. The Cards game was perfect timing for him to show his diversity

I remember watching Jaworski do a breakdown of the Saints earlier in the season. He showed a 20 yard of so TD pass where Brees found a wide open TE or WR in the right corner of the endzone.

But, the reason for showing the play was to show how badly the other team bit on the fake pitch to Reggie going the opposite way.

The ENTIRE defense bought the fake and went with Reggie. Jaws pointed out that Reggie might be one of the best decoys in the NFL. Jaws said that even when Reggie hasn't strung together a few good games, he is a nightmare for Defensive Coordinators and they spend an inordinate amount of time gameplanning against him.

Watching the play Jaws used to illustrate this was convincing to me.

His athletic ability is not the matter in question. Its the strain he puts on the salary cap. He's an amazing player but the $8 million he is due next season is a bit pricey considering the lack of depth the Saints have on defense.

1) No cap next year.
2) Charles Grant puts as much of a strain on the cap as Bush does.
3) WE WERE FIVE frickING MILLION DOLLARS BELOW THE CAP THIS YEAR

Absolutely. That was the precise context of the analysis. He thinks Reggie's skill set is particularly fit for New Orleans. Therefore, the team has a bit more bargaining power in contract negotiations.

Personally, I think we'll sign him to an extension, with less money due the next two years.

yep,and CUT GRANT. We need to draft a DE this year big time. Hell, i would draft all defensive players again this year except for a LT possibly.

Well if not a strain on the cap a strain on the cash the Saints are willing to dish out. I just think that given our offense being in great shape we could spend more money on the secondary to build some depth. I love Reggie and think he's one of the most amazing players to watch, but from a business stand point we could get some guys to fill in as a nickel corner, maybe a offensive lineman for security. He can do some great things but defensively the Saints have struggled when injured.

The Saints built more balance offensively this past season by being able to run the ball more consistently. I think we should focus on being more consistent defensively by getting some guys to add some variety to the defensive looks we can throw at teams. Maybe mix up the defensive line for certain situations, throw in a strong nickel corner.

It's pretty much agreed on by all that Grant is the most overpaid player on this team.

Reggie on the other hand is more polarizing which is why there are so many threads about this one player.

Soph, I'll take your word that that's true but for me it doesn't change the fact that Reggie is still overpaid. His inconsistency doesn't warrant the huge contract he has. And although I don't fault the young man for getting his I do believe the Saints front office has a fiscal responsiblity to get their money's worth.

Removing Grant from the roster and reworking Reggie's contract are two outstanding issues the Saints are going to have to confront this offseason.

Yeah, i remember seeing that breakdown by Jaws. It just goes to show how much Reggie effects the game even if he doesn't have many touches or yards.

Oh, and hey Cowherd, how did all of our "small school" players do Saturday you shmuck.

They're not going to cut him. Almost every bit of speculation of this bent came from the national media. Jeff Duncan, who is as close to the daily workings of the team as anyone in the media, has stated repeatedly that he never thought they were going to cut him to free up cap room.

...and his reads on the team have been pretty reliable

If Reggie performs like he did Saturday in next weeks game, then in the Superbowl(if we get there), he will be worth every bit of money on his contract. If he falls off in the next two games, I see a restructured contract.

I've been saying this all season long but you get a healthy Reggie Bush in there and the Saints are a different team.
