Cornbread just made me think of asking you people about opinions on crockpots. After reading reviews it seems as though many people complain about them either shutting off mid cook cycle or getting way too hot even on warm and burning their food.

I'm looking to maybe get a portable crockpot, that is good quality. What size should I also look at getting?

portable crockpot,

Portable ?

Its a crockpot not an Ipod

Got you one with differant tempature settings.

And I like one that has a removable crock. Easy to clean.

I have the Hamilton Beach 3 in 1 that has 3 differant size crocks.

The size question should answer itself. Portable shouldn't be an issue, so just think about what and how much you'll want to cook in it. As for shutting off, you can do your homework and find a good brand. Burning food in a crock pot is always the result of cooking the moisture out of the food, so getting the temperature (low versus high) and timing right are key.

The problems you cite sound like they're from folks who want to throw stuff in the pot, mash a button and have a complete meal in 6-12 hours. That does seem to be the aura surrounding crock pots, but there is a modicum of prep that needs to be done.

Bottom line, if you're slightly handy in the kitchen and buy a good quality pot you won't have problems.

Not really "portable", but it works well.

I have 2 pots- one that's large for doing meals, and a smaller one that's for dips and appetizers. Neither one cost over $50. The larger one is 6 qt

and the smaller is Procter-Silex (I think) and it's the one that you could find at Albertson's for $20 over the holidays. Not sure if they're there anymore.

We got this one. Works great. The wife made a beef stew in it yesterday.

Bought one in Nov at Sams that has three 2 1/2 qt crocks in a row. Used it at ThksGvg and Xmas for a group of folks. For example we had oyster dressing, green beans, and mashed potatoes in a row. Saves stove and oven space for more things. Works well with 3 temp settings.

DEFINITELY! I have a small one that is not removable and I hate it. My big one is removable and it does make life easier.
This is mine, and I like it- it's only 30 bucks at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Go with large and not perfectly round. You want oval. A large chicken is not round. A large roast is not round. One side is longer than the other.

The biggest advantage of a crock pot to me is cooking while you are away. Set it up, turn it on low and go do whatever for 6 or 7 hours. Coming home to the smell is great.

and 3 temp settings.

6 quart handles a large boston butt.

the 2 quart is great for party dips

It should not burn in a crock pot, just make sure that it is more than half full, and you have enough liquid.

Making Thai Chicken in it right now.

a little back story to the crock pot question....portable because I'm crazy enough to bring the damn thing to work and finish cooking so I can have lunch. Selections for lunch choices and budget changes are kind of limiting my choices for food during the day and I can only eat so many sandwiches and wraps.

I am trying to think of things that can be made through devices other than a stove (I don't cook at home a ton, so leftovers are a bit difficult), like a microwave, toaster oven, and maybe a crock pot, rice cooker....because that's what we have here at work.
