3rd and Chavis as something that cost LSU = Myth

Went through all the 3rd downs for LSU's losses. Didn't count 1st downs achieved through penalty yardage or those plays that were de-done by penalty yardage. So is 3rd and Chavis on 3rd and long something that cost us games? Absolutely not.
Florida game, overall 5 of 12 on 3rd downs. 4 of 8 on 3rd and 3 or less. No surprise, our defense couldn't stop short runs. 1 of 4 on 3rd and 4 or more. No real problems with stopping them on medium to long 3rd downs here.
Alabama game, overall 4 of 14 on 3rd downs. 1 of 2 on 3rd and 3 or less. 3 of 12 on 3rd and 4 or more. Another 25% conversion number, which while not great, is not by any means bad.
Ole Miss, overall 5 of 13 on 3rd downs. 3 of 3 (!) on 3rd and 3 or less. They mauled our DL, no surprise there. 2 of 10 on 3rd and 4 or more.
Penn State, overall 7 of 19 on 3rd down, our worst performance of the four losses by far. 2 of 6 on 3rd and 3 or less. 5 of 13 on 3rd and 4 or more. Bad performance there, but not so bad for one game that you can really say that 3rd and Chavis was present this year and cost us games.

why didnt you include all games?

Thank you, Tigercat. The problem this year was the 120th ranked offense that finished 128th in number of plays.

just as I thought, if no one had said this before he got here, it wouldn't have even been brought up

That final drive by Penn State was brutal. 5/13 is not good at all for 3rd and 4+.

I hate it when stats mess up a popular complaint.

You need to pull up all the games, not just the losses. It has nothing to do with being the deciding factor in a win or loss, but a contributor. I think your numbers are cherry picked a little.

Why would he need to? He posted about the games we lost.

Not to mention part of the reason our D was on the field was 3 & out, 3 & out, 3 & out. Tough to stop teams when they have the ball 40 minutes. Oh yea, and Penn St. started in LSU territory 4 times producing 6 pts. Not too bad IMO.

Yep, Chavis couldn't do much about us sucking on the D line. We couldn't stop short runs much except for Moo St lol

I may be bored today at a computer, but I am not THAT bored. Just trying to debate the statement made that 3rd and Chavis really hurt us this year.

First 3rd down of the year at Washington: 3rd and 9, screen pass for about 20 yard gain. It became official that 3rd and Chavis had arrived to Baton Rouge.

What down was it when JC had his pick 6?

I have the 2004 Sugar Bowl on. Guess what? Oklahoma picked up a first down on a long 4th down. OMG! Saban sucked!!

Lack of pressure on QB, piss poor D line play, playing way too much zone are what cost LSU on defense.

NO.
112th ranked offense with the lowest number of plays (120th) is what cost us this year.

Oh I agree it isn't good, you could go so far as to say our 3rd down D overall was bad for that game. But it was the worst 3rd down performances of our losses, and yet even then we weren't bad enough to put a stigma on our D or our coordinator.

What was it on 3rd and 8 or more?

Not bad at all. And I totally agree in the mythical assessment of Chief's scheme. You give him a Dorsey or Lavalais pushing the middle or a MHill or TJ caving the tackles into the QB's and Chief's scheme can win championships. Now if we can just fix the offense...
